The Engineering Manager is accountable for all design and development activities of existing product lines, including product line maintenance, as well as the development and implementation of new solutions and technologies within the Retail Fueling business. This position will lead a team of engineers including the research and development team in order to deliver planned revenue and margin growth. Through demonstrated strong leadership skills and exceptional technical capability, the Engineering Manager is responsible for delivering customer-focused solutions and products. Travel up to 40%, as required.

Essential Responsibilities

* Evaluate new product requests and determine technical aspects of project feasibility.

* Provide leadership and technical oversight including a robust product technology roadmap for all new products, partnering across departments from design to release.

* Closely interface with Product Management and other technical groups to effectively maximize new and sustaining engineering projects and processes.

* Assure engineering maintenance of existing products, including upgrading design specification, utilization of new materials, and processes to facilitate effective and efficient production is consistently accomplished.

* Organize prototype manufacturing utilizing in-house capabilities and/or outsourcing.

* Lead engineering teams to understand and commit themselves to the ongoing, continuous improvement of their work and work processes. Actively participate in continuous improvement activities and apply across engineering activities and processes. Drive the lean manufacturing culture.

* Responsible for administrative management of engineering team including activities such as hiring, organizational development, goal setting and performance evaluations, salary administration, succession planning, developmental training, etc. is regularly accomplished.

Functional Leadership:

* Participate in business strategy sessions and align Engineering's objectives to ensure execution of all strategic engineering initiatives. Prioritize engineering projects and activities that support the overall strategic plan.

* Assign projects to appropriate engineering resource and hold accountable for deliverables, and results. Develop metrics for measuring engineering staff performance and project success.

* Regularly assess engineering talent and provide developmental opportunities to enhance individual and overall team capabilities.

* Advise OPW leadership team on decisions regarding new product development and progress. Assure all facets of the engineering processes are completed in the most technically correct, cost-effective, and expeditious manner. Partner with leadership team to identify and implement appropriate new technologies and ensure product manufacturing capabilities.

* Assign and monitor the effectiveness of the development of test equipment and fixtures as required to qualify new designs. Manage engineering team activities through direct assembly and testing of first-run prototypes using in-house labs, off-site testing resources, and/or field testing. Leverage working relationship with the quality department and engineering lab team.

* Assure that technical product support and expertise is available for risk management, sales, and other field functions. Also, responsible for ensuring that regulatory, patent, and other standards are consistently met, with accuracy.

Product Design:

* Evaluate and assess new product requests; determine technical aspects of project feasibility. Ensure product development metrics are met, with the focus on cost-effective design, manufacturability, and industry need.

* Foster collaborative cross-functional relationships (Sales, Finance, Engineering, Manufacturing, etc.) to ensure new products are innovative, meet customer need, are of high quality, and readily able to be manufactured.

* Establish global product technology roadmaps for all product families. Partner with Product Management and other technical groups to develop a seamless process that maximizes new products and sustains engineering projects.

* Complete regular reviews of customer concerns/return material authorizations and warranty issues and consistently drive programs to reduce both. Assure cost reductions and emerging technologies are disclosed, evaluated, and implemented, as appropriate. Coordinate efforts/resources with the quality departments.

* Effectively manage projects across internal teams in support of customer requirements and ongoing new product development. Responsible for managing all contracts for engineering services and project management related to outsourced engineering projects.

* Initiate action to prevent the occurrence of any non-conformities relating to product, process and quality systems. Initiate, recommend, and provide solutions through designated channels. Verify implementation of solutions and problem resolution. Partner with Quality and Operations to control further processing, delivery, or installation of non-conforming product until the deficiency or unsatisfactory condition has been corrected.

* Drive new Product Development Process (PDP). Ensure disciplined process and steps are consistently followed. Partner with manufacturing and quality to establish common processes and best practices.


* At least 10 years of Engineering experience in a Petroleum Fluid Handling Manufacturing or Industrial environment

* Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, MBA or Masters preferred

* Ability to travel up to 40% of the time to support customers and business goals. Must be able to travel domestically and internationally.

* Must have firm understanding of the Petroleum Fluid Handling Industry. Specifically dispenser hanging hardware and other Above Ground equipment. Needs to have intimate knowledge of Retail Fueling end users, equipment manufacturers and regulators. Must have proven experience handling projects with Underwriters Laboratories (UL) and California Air Resources Board (CARB).

* Well-developed critical thinking and problem solving skills - strategic thinker. Highly proactive in seeking out and reviewing data in order to make informed "tough" decisions to achieve business goals. On-going appreciation and awareness of engineering design tools, software, and automation to attain a high level of design productivity.

* Ability and experience evaluating similar product lines and leading production rationalization initiatives.

* Solid working knowledge of the patent process and the ability to interpret patent claims.

* Demonstrated ability to establish and execute work plans based on the results of strategic planning and input from executive management. Able to perform Return on Investment (ROI) analysis and provide resulting recommendations.

* Able to organize and manage multiple priorities simultaneously including facilitating activities necessary to achieve objectives and project completion.

* Ability to read, write, verbalize and comprehend instructions and correspondence in English at the highest levels.

* Excellent interpersonal, communication, and customer service skills – well developed verbal and written communications, which demonstrate a high level of technical knowledge and expertise. Work collaboratively and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers.

* Must have working knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel, internet, and computer-aided design and drafting.

* Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and group situations to customers, clients, and other team members.

* Self-directed, positive and ethical role model able to work with minimal supervision.
