Job Summary and Responsibilities/Duties

Job Summary

Performs a wide variety of duties in support of student services including online admissions, registration, student records, advising, financial aid, and testing center processes. Assists the Orientation Center Coordinator with the day-to-day functions of the Orientation Center including: individualized & group-based trainings for new, current, and restarting students in navigating the College's online services; evaluation of placement test scores, first-term academic planning and informal degree audits; and financial aid policies and procedures. Responsible for helping students make decisions that impact student's educational goals. Assists with the opening and closing of the Center and supervising the work-study and student-aid staff.

Essential Duties

* Serves as the primary assistant to the Orientation Center Coordinator in developing and conducting individualized and group-based trainings for new, current & restarting students on navigating MyMHCC and its online services in a culturally diverse setting.

* Performs evaluation of placement testing as it applies to academic advising and implements accordingly; explains college placement test scores and recommends retests as needed.

* Advises students in first-term academic plans that are compatible with career and life goals; ensures that first-term plans are accurate with current catalog year's curriculum and implications for keeping students on track for graduation, including detailed guidance on prerequisites and program requirements; provides students with information related to academic and faculty advisement and career planning resources.

* Teaches students to use technical systems such as College and government websites and applications, including but not limited to MHCC student portal, federal financial aid websites, MHCC bookstore website, and web financial services (business office) system.

* Explains how to apply for financial aid and provides federal and MHCC-specific information to students and parents regarding financial aid processes and regulations; answers questions relating to financial assistance and maximum timeframe appeals.

* Applies knowledge of College and community support services and facilitates referrals to faculty and resources when appropriate.

* Collaborates closely with other employees and departments to solve difficult or unusual situations and concerns.

* Delivers high caliber service in person, on the phone, via email and live online chat following the College's Culture of Excellence standards.

Additional Duties

* Applies the college's interpretation of FERPA.

* Performs all other related duties as assigned.

* Able to effectively handle multiple tasks, priorities and changing deadlines.

* Supports the Orientation Center Coordinator in supervising work-study and student aid staff.

* Assists the Orientation Center Coordinator in overseeing and securing a computer-equipped lab.

Minimum and Desired Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

* Bachelor's degree

* Two years of experience similar to the essential duties of the position

* Knowledge of current computer software packages including intermediate-level knowledge of word processing, database, presentation and email applications, and beginning-level knowledge of spreadsheet applications, preferably within the Microsoft Office Suite

* Excellent oral and written communication skills, including active listening skills

Additional qualifying education/experience may be substituted, year for year, for education/experience.

Desired Qualifications

* Experience working as professional academic adviser, First Year/Term Experience programs or orientations in a college setting

* Bilingual skills with fluency in English and Spanish, Russian, or other language that meets community needs

* Knowledge of community college systems and philosophy.

* Knowledge of curriculum program offerings at the college, in addition to policies and procedures relating to admissions, registration, testing and placement.

* Knowledge of general financial aid info related to FAFSA process.

* Excellent oral and written communication skills, including active listening skills.

* Ability to work well with individuals with diverse backgrounds.

Working Conditions and Important Information

Working Conditions

Work is typically performed in a normal office environment working with a diverse population. Work environment is often noisy and crowded with students and staff. Frequent interruption or change in work flow is expected. Occasional strain to the eyes while working with a computer terminal.
