Prevention Educator

Purpose

To provide educational programs to adolescents and adults that build awareness, skills, and knowledge aimed at the prevention of substance abuse, adolescent pregnancy, and improving developmental outcomes.

Area of Responsibility

* Provide educational programs for adolescents and young adults on substance abuse prevention, responsibility, decision-making, and goal-setting, with a particular emphasis on youth in or recently aged out of foster care

* Provide evidenced based programs with an emphasis on prevention

* Provide programs for parents/guardians on effective communication with teens regarding substance abuse and sexuality

* Provide trainings for professionals on program replication

* Adhere to the approved Substance Abuse prevention curriculums for program fidelity

* Recruit youth for programs; collaborate with schools and community groups

* Maintain accurate records of activities and develop reports as required

* Assist with program evaluation by adhering to evaluation protocol

* Generation of monthly statistical reports as needed

* Develop and maintain involvement with relevant community and professional organizations

* Attend required monthly and regional trainings

* Provide and/or oversee all community initiatives

* Maintain up to date needs assessment data

* Adhere to LME and State Block Grant Policies for programming efforts

* Travel required 25-30% (monthly meetings, marketing, trainings, etc.)

* Assist with agency interns by interviewing candidates and supervision of interns.

General

* Perform other duties related to division goals and projects as needed

* Display sensitivity to the service population's cultural and socioeconomic characteristics

Qualifications

* Bachelor's degree required

* Substance Abuse certification preferred

* Knowledge of adolescent development and experience teaching, developing, and implementing educational programs for youth and adults, organizing community groups, and training professionals in substance abuse prevention

* Knowledge and understanding of the North Carolina foster care system

* Maintain a valid North Carolina driver's license, adequate auto insurance, and have access to an operating vehicle in order to attend to CHS business
