This position is located in the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), Agricultural Research Service (ARS), Mosquito and Fly Research, located in Gainesville, FL.

This position will support a Research Entomologist as part of a team conducting research on developing ways to protect humans and animals from insects that transmit disease. Research will develop new products in support of U.S Agriculture and the Department of Defense. The focus of the research will be on developing new insecticide and spatial repellent technologies to reduce the risk from bite by vector insects such as mosquitoes.

This is a temporary, excepted service position not-to-exceed 1 year or less and may be extended in increments not-to-exceed 1 or less for up to 8 years in total, when the student intern remains eligible for the program.

Upon successful completion of the Pathways Student Internship Program, an intern may be non-competitively converted to a term or permanent position in the competitive service and may be converted to a position with promotion potential higher than that of the internship position. Please note that conversion to the competitive service is not mandatory or guaranteed for participants.

This internship will only be filled at one of the following grade levels: GS-05 or 06.

This internship is temporary with a not-to-exceed date of 1 year or less; therefore, it does not have promotion potential.

Responsibilities

Major Duties:

* Rears and handles mosquitoes and other vector insects.

* Conducts pesticide and spatial repellent bioassays.

* Organizes, conducts and analyzes control and surveillance activities for insect vectors in the field.

* Keeps detailed records of data, enters data into spreadsheets, and analyzes data using statistical programs.

Individuals must be accepted for enrollment or be enrolled and currently seeking a degree (diploma, certificate, etc.) from a qualifying educational institution on a full or half-time basis, as determined by their educational institution.

Individuals must be in good academic standing with their educational institution.

Individuals must have academic or career goals related to the duties and responsibilities of this position.

If selected, you will be required to sign a Pathways Student Internship Participant Agreement prior to entrance-on-duty date.

If selected, you must meet program eligibility requirements, as annotated in the Pathways Participant Agreement, throughout the duration of the internship.

Students must be at least 16 years of age and meet Federal, State and Local laws governing the employment of minors.

Applicants must meet all qualification and eligibility requirements by 11:59 pm Eastern Time on the closing date of the announcement.

Program Eligibility Requirements

* Applicants must be currently enrolled or accepted for enrollment from a qualifying educational institution on a full or half-time basis. Applicants must be seeking a degree (diploma, certificate, etc.) and be in good academic standing (GPA of 2.0 or equivalent) throughout the duration of their program.

* The duties of the position must be related to either the student's academic or career goals.

Qualification Requirements

Applicants will be assessed/evaluated through application of the agency developed qualification standard for internship positions, which is based solely onlevel of education.

OR

Applicants will be assessed/evaluated through application of the OPM Job Qualification System for Trades and Labor Occupations.

At the GS-05:

Completion of 4 academic years of post-high scholl leading to a bachelor's degree or equivalent degree.

At the GS-06:

Completion of 1 full academic year of graduate level education or eligibility under the Superior Academic Achievement Provision after completing a bachelor's degree.

Education

All academic degrees or course work must be completed in an educational institution that has obtained accreditation from an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. For a list of schools that meet this criteria, see http://www.ed.gov/.

A post-secondary certificate program must have been completed at a qualified educational institution equivalent to at least 1 academic year or full-time study that is part of an accredited college-level, technical, trade, vocational, or business school curriculum.
