This professional, technical position is responsible for maintaining and enhancing Frederick County's 24x7 highly-available systems operations environment of physical and virtual servers running on server-class hardware and peripherals located in multiple data centers. The environment includes Microsoft Server Operating Systems, Linux Operating Systems, VMware, SAN infrastructure, along with various enterprise application platforms including database systems, system monitoring and alerting, patch management, and remote access infrastructure. This position works closely with other senior staff to ensure DR/BC operations and operational security within the server landscape. Supervision is received from the System Operations Functional Lead.

Essential Duties and Job Responsibilities:

* Maintain and manage Microsoft Server infrastructure including the configuration, deployment, and management of Windows physical and virtual servers, storage, security, performance monitoring, and capacity planning

* Manage multi server environments requiring clustering technologies and other failover strategies

* Manage solutions and support for remotely connected customers and the associated technologies such as Terminal Services

* Resolve errors and alarms quickly and provide timely escalation

* Troubleshoot complex problems and drive resolutions

* Work independently, or with a team consisting of internal staff and/or external vendors/consultants to resolve issues or implement new systems

* Recommend server configurations, technology upgrades, migrations, improvement projects

* Initiate reviews of new technologies along with the ROI of the effort

* Design, test and implementation of complex technical solutions and architecture

* Lead and project manage system initiatives and new projects

* Define, recommend, and support process improvements

* Perform other related duties as required

* Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Management Information Systems or related field

* Minimum 5 years IT work experience

* NOTE: A combination of additional work experience, certifications(Network+, A+, VCP, MCTS, MCITP, PMP, ITIL, CCNA or other related certification) or education may substitute for the education or work experience requirements


* Management of a large physical and virtual Windows server environment with server-class hardware and peripherals located in multiple data centers performing hardware maintenance, software patching, system backups and monitoring

* Strong troubleshooting skills

* Demonstrated project management skills

* Ability to effectively organize work, determine priorities and complete assigned duties with minimal supervision

* Ability to work individually, and develop and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, customers, and vendors

* Strong and effective spoken and written (English) communication skills


* Experience with Advanced, Active Directory & Domain architecture, Group Policy, DNS, OS security, and systems patching

* Experience with virtualization technologies, VMware, AppV, VDI

* Experience with network storage - NAS and/or SAN

* Experience with implementing and using systems monitoring software, preferably SolarWinds

* Experience with Microsoft SQL, Exchange and SCCM/Systems Center Orchestrator

* Experience administering load balancing and application delivery

* Advanced scripting and automation skills – Powershell, VB, etc.

* Experience with defining or testing disaster recovery strategies

* Experience leading projects from conception to implementation and maintenance


* While working in this position, the employee is required to constantly sit and perform repetitive motions; frequently walk, and rarely climb, stoop, crawl, lift up to and over 50 pounds, push and pull up to and over 40 pounds, reach and drive

* While working in this position, the employee is required to constantly work indoors, and rarely works outdoors, in hot temperatures (above 100 degrees) and cold temperatures (below 32 degrees), works in a dirty, dusty and noisy environment, works in confined spaces and at heights

Additional Information/Examination Process:

* Provide own transportation as needed for meetings and other departmental priorities

* Available for off hours support coverage and occasional evening/weekend work required for special projects and/or emergency situations
