Department Mission

The Global Business Development & Licensing (BD&L) department is part of the Global Strategy & Business Development (S&BD) unit, a Global Enabling Function within Sanofi Group. The mission of Global BD&L is to seek and execute external growth initiatives to address the Sanofi Group´s strategic priorities. This mission is fully supporting Sanofi´s 2015-2020 strategic roadmap, specially aligned with the following strategic priorities: Reshape the portfolio and Sustain innovation in R&D.

The key activities of Global BD&L are the scouting, evaluation, structuring, negotiation and closing of strategic alliances with external companies beyond Sanofi Group, involving products and other product-related assets.

The main responsibilities of Global BD&L include:

* Seeking and executing external growth and collaborations opportunities (Alliances and Licensing) in coherence with the Group´s strategy;

* Evaluating the economic interest of external projects maximizing value creation for the Group.

The External Innovation Team within Global Business Development and Licensing is responsible for leading the search, initial evaluation and transactions for R&D opportunities and assets, in alignment with the Global Business Units.

Job Summary

Reporting to the Head of External Innovation, Rare Diseases, the individual will be expected to contribute to the strategy and execution of the rare diseases business development roadmap. In addition to being a strong and trusted representative with external parties, the position provides opportunity and accountability for close relationships and coordination with BD&L colleagues and stakeholders in the Rare Diseases Therapeutic Area.

Key responsibilities include:

* Contribute to global search and evaluation activities, with the goal of leveraging our global reach to identify the best opportunities regardless of source;

* Provide input and guidance on optimal scientific deal structure scenarios that can efficiently drive to key inflection points, thereby minimizing contractual risk;

* Develop an appropriate level of understanding of patients' needs, treatment options and competition to select and prioritize across opportunities;

* Maintain awareness and knowledge of Rare Diseases ecosystem by following scientific and business trends, companies and key stakeholders;

* Build and maintain an external and internal KOL network in Rare Diseases;

* Set and deliver on individual goals and measures (KPIs) consistent with the TA expectations, including shared accountability for tracking, reporting and communicating progress on our External Innovation portfolio via eDe@l;

* Provide leadership on specific programs from the start of the evaluation through the governance process and to the start of due diligence;

* With deal and assessment teams, build and maintain aggressive and realistic project management timelines, roles and responsibilities through the end-to-end process;

* With the Rare Diseases BD team and TA, contribute to developing, refining and executing on a viable, comprehensive External Innovation Strategy for the TA – the "External Innovation Roadmap";

* With the Rare Diseases BD team and TA, contribute to prioritization of external opportunities, based on, for example, strategic fit, strength of the science and overall business case;

* Represent Sanofi with partners and at industry and partnering conferences, always acting as an ambassador for Sanofi to external audiences;

* Contribute to building a world-class partnering organization made up of highly capable and motivated professionals who together form a vibrant learning community.

Background and Qualifications

Education: PhD and/or MD in an area of drug discovery or development

Experience: 7+ years working in multi-disciplinary teams within the life science industry; formal roles in

R&D are required, additional roles in business development and/or due diligence are preferred

Language: Fluent in written and spoken English

* Excellent technical and scientific comprehension, translating to an ability to quickly understand a novel mechanism of action, disease indication or a drug discovery technology;

* Evidence of excellent organizational and project management skills, able to work to agreed timelines with a focus on execution and implementation;

* Ability to combine an understanding of science and technologies with business considerations and basic commercial and financial models;

* Ability to function in a dynamic environment with rapidly changing activities and priorities;

* Collaborative, able to work effectively with transvers, cross-functional, cross-cultural teams;

* Ability to contribute to, communicate and act on a strategic vision and plan;

* Strong judgment, problem-solving, conflict-resolution and decision-making skills;

* Strong interpersonal, communication and presentation skills;

* Negotiation skills across all levels of the organization and with external parties;

* Ability to be a Sanofi ambassador Sanofi to the external scientific/academic communities;

* Willingness to travel internationally as needed.


The position is based in the Cambridge/Framingham area, with availability to travel as required for interaction with external groups and companies and internal teams and stakeholders.
