Responsibilities

* Serves as steam, hot water-boiler, heating, ventilation, and pipe-fitter mechanic, performing repair and/or maintenance of air conditioning systems or units.

* Overhaul and repair industrial and domestic heating systems, gas and oil fired steam and hot boilers, gas and oil fired furnaces, etc.

* Overhaul and repair a variety of complex auxiliary components, automatic controls, motors, pumps, impellers, steam and hot water generators, pressurized steam and hot water distribution and circulation systems, receivers, heat pumps, etc.

Selective Placement Factor: Incumbent is required to maintain a chlorofluorocarbon (CFC) certification type universal as required by section 608 of the Clean Air Act, 1990 EPA mandatory technician certification. A Universal Certification is Required, this entails all of the following certifications (Type I, Type II and Type III). Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of an Heating and Boiler Plant Mechanic without more than normal supervision. I can repair, maintain, and/or service industrial steam, hot water, or forced air heating systems, water softeners, chemical treatment equipment, associated steam piping, water piping, and equipment. I can repair or troubleshoot large complicated heating units and systems in boiler plants which produce steam or high-temperature hot water to provide heat or hot water for buildings. I work under normal supervision of a work leader or journey-level employee who observes tasks in progress and upon completion to make sure they are properly performed. - Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating.

* Physical Effort: Frequently lifts, positions, and carries parts, equipment, tools, and other objects weighing up to 50 lbs.; items weighing more than 50 lbs. are generally moved with the assistance of other workers or by use of mechanical lifting devices. Frequently works in tiring and uncomfortable positions for extended periods. The work frequently requires standing, walking, bending, crouching, and similar strenuous physical effort, such as working from scaffolds, platforms, ladders, and hard to reach places.

* Working Conditions: Work is performed both indoors and outdoors, requiring frequent exposure to inclement weather and temperature extremes. Subject to abnormal heat from boilers, high noise levels, falls, burns, and exposure to chemicals and toxic substances. Hearing protection and similar safety equipment must be worn during all periods of exposure to hazardous conditions.
