The Manager- R&D must ensure that product performance requirements are tested and documented during field testing, and produce data based recommendations that will optimize product performance. Primary responsibilities include the management of field testing across a spectrum of products through a matrix organization structure

Responsible for developing the overall, integrated field test strategy based on the product drive calendar, defined organizational objectives, competitive arena, and a deep understanding of key stakeholder needs and expectations. Work with cross functional teams including Marketing, Product, Concept Development Engineers, Designers, and Quality Assurance to identify product performance issues during real-world Field Testing.

* Strategically develop, document and maintain a Field Testing Process that correlates and is adaptable to the development timeline and product drive calendar for each release window and season.

* Identify and establish a qualified roster of internal Oakley employees and build a trusted network of external testers who have expertise in the activity of interest and who will supply timely, well-articulated feedback.

* Develop and document a network of contacts for the purpose of: location scouting, transit routes, accommodations, and meals.

* Create the daily project in-field time management including: tests to be accomplished, participation of field test participants, and feedback to be gathered in real time incorporating expertise of real world conditions, transit, meals, recovery, and discussion.

* Direct daily projects that include but are not limited to data collection, competitor research, test group and athlete communication / interviews, and test group meetings to analyze product performance and brainstorm new ideas.

* Document, organize and summarize testing results and feedback into comprehensive reports that will allow quick and decisive reaction from R&D, Design, and Product Teams.

* Maintain records and files of the physical inventory for all testing samples.

* Responsible for industry and competitor product research to ensure Oakley’s Design, Merchandising and Development teams are educated on competitive products and industry performance trends.

* Work in R&D Performance Lab to gain a lab testing perspective that can then be correlated to the field testing perspective.


* Bachelors of Science degree in Engineering, Design, Cognitive Science, Sociology, and Anthropology.

* 5+ years related industry experience.

* Must be able to travel domestically and internationally for business.

* Requires minimal direction in executing test, experiments, test parameters, and collection of data and research.

* Able to organize collection of data and research in the field and consolidate data into meaningful insights and actionable feedback.

* Clean, accurate and precise work documentation, self-starter, self-motivator; proactive with natural inclination to think outside the box.

* Strong self-management.


* Demonstrated understanding of Critical Thinking, Design Thinking, and Discovery methods.

* Strong industry and athlete relations.

* Thorough knowledge of Oakley products and passion for innovation and performance.
