Patient Services Representative

The incumbent is responsible for assisting with clinical, clerical and organizational tasks included in patient services. He/she facilitates patient check-in and checkout procedures, collects patient payments and manages information necessary for the patient visit.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND EXAMPLES OF WORK: This list of tasks may be changed or other tasks may be assigned as necessary.

Check-in

* Greets patients and visitors and provides instructions/directions as needed

* Ensures that patient has signed in on patient log

* Obtains and reviews patient information for accuracy and completeness and assists patients as they complete forms when necessary

* Updates patient profiles and insurance information

* Obtains signatures on Release and HIPAA forms

* Informs clinical staff of patient arrival

* Obtains patient referrals as required by managed care plans

* Generates fee tickets when patients arrive

* Monitors schedule and organizes patient flow

Checkout

* Generates lab tickets for lab work ordered

* Enters charges and payments

* Calculates cost/co-pay by collecting patient billing information

* Determines the amount, if any, which should be collected from patient at the end of office visit

* Collects fees, co-payments, and outstanding balances

* Manages and balances patient monies at the end of the day

Clerical

* Scans and indexes medical charts into EMR (electronic medical record)

* Copies and faxes documents/information as needed

* Checks in packages that are delivered and distributes them to appropriate person

* Answers phones and provides information to caller or routes call to appropriate person

* Makes "pre-made" charts for new patients

* Assists health information clerks as needed

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

* Graduation from a standard four (4) year high school or equivalent (GED)

* At least one year of full time work experience in a Medical Practice preferred

* EMR experience preferred
