This position is responsible for proper collection, labeling and transporting of blood and other patient specimens. This position works with laboratory staff, patients, nursing and medical personnel in the collection of specimens. The majority of time is spent bending, standing and walking (up to 80% of work time), carrying and lifting up to 20 lbs. is required. This position has potential exposure to body fluids and communicable diseases. The phlebotomist must have sufficient auditory acuity to effectively communicate test information via telephone. In addition, acute visual perception is required to read test orders for requisitions or test labels. Manuel dexterity is required. Patient population is birth to geriatric.

SPECIFIC EDUCATIONAL AND SKILL COMPETENCIES REQUIRED FOR THIS POSITION
Good communication skills, organizational skills and the ability to operate standard office equipment (including copier, computer, fax machine, and typewriter) as usually associated with the completion of high school studies. Previous exposure to medical terminology, phlebotomy training, and computer experience are strongly preferred. Must be able to work with others cooperatively. Attention to details is essential for successful performance.
