Bilingual Family and Community Advocate

POSITION SUMMARY: Responsible for providing a variety of outreach, advocacy and support services to Latino individuals and families; services include interpretation and translation, information and referral, advocacy, arranging for health care, access to public benefits and support and education to parents and adolescents.


* Receives and responds to requests for services and assistance made by Latino families, individuals and/or service providers on behalf of Latinos.

* Assesses the request for service and determines if it is within the mission and capacity of Puentes; discusses alternatives with the family in order to enlist the family in developing and carrying out a plan of action.

* Remains knowledgeable about public benefits, community resources and their respective eligibility; assists and advocates on behalf of clients to assure that they receive services and benefits that they are eligible for and need.

* Assists families and individuals to access needed health care; provides interpretation and translation; assists families to develop resources for transportation.

* As requested, presents educational programs to various groups, including adolescents, Latino women, service providers and others.

* As assigned, works directly with parents to increase knowledge of child development and parenting skills.

* Maintains records and statistics as required by the agency, and other funding sources and make suggestions for revision and review. Performs other administrative tasks as assigned.

* Meet goals as stated in grant/ program plan.

* Attend trainings as identified by the agency and/or funder.

* Attend staffing and meetings as needed.

* Participate and support additional community events as an organization representative.

* Responds to on-call case assistance for Spanish speaking families involved with Department of Children & Family Services.

* Other duties as assigned.


* A High School diploma or GED: Bachelor's degree preferred

* Must be bilingual and have experience working with the Latino population.

* Must have a valid driver's license.

* Possess the experience, personal qualities and practice skills to work effectively with professionals from a variety of disciplines both internally and with other organization.

* Strong organizational and time management skills.

* Demonstrated understanding, and capacity to work with individuals of diverse racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds, religions, disabilities, and ages.

* Excellent oral and written communication skills.

* Excellent interpersonal skills.

* Skills in making public presentations, and in conducting formal training internally and externally.

* DCFS/CANTS clearance.
