An employee in this position works in conjunction with, or under the supervision of a Facility Manager performing a variety of skilled work in the operation, repair, and maintenance of buildings, grounds, equipment and other related work as required. An employee operates, maintains, and repairs equipment including plumbing, carpentry, electrical, air-conditioning, refrigeration, as well as a working knowledge of all other skill areas. Must be available to attend classroom training outside of scheduled work hours
Must have a high school diploma or equivalent; able to read, write, and speak English fluently, and have a solid working knowledge of general maintenance techniques and minor equipment repair. Mechanical/electrical trade school apprenticeship completion or equivalents preferred.
Experience:The Maintenance Specialist is expected to have a minimum of four years experience in general maintenance work. Experience in a hospital or similar setting is preferred.
Knowledge and ability to operate shop tools, stationary and portable shop tools, Exhibits considerable knowledge of the system, theory and procedures for repair and maintenance in one of the following areas: electrical, air conditioning and refrigeration, carpentry and painting. Exhibits considerable knowledge of commercial plumbing systems and procedures for repair and maintenance.
Exhibits considerable knowledge of procedures, materials and tools used in commercial building remodels and cabinet construction. Exhibits considerable knowledge of uniform electrical and building codes. Exhibits considerable knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions of the building and mechanical trades.
Exhibits ability to inspect systems and buildings to detect existing or potential problems. Exhibits ability to analyze situations and develop an effective course of action. Ability to perform arithmetic calculations as required by the job. Ability to maintain records and prepare reports.
Knowledge of general maintenance techniques is required, i.e., basic carpentry and remodeling, electrical repairs, plumbing, air conditioning, and painting to include, but not be limited to the following: fixing doors, locks, keys, hinges, catches, etc.; replace electrical motors, belts, pulleys, repair simple mechanical equipment; replace worn wire, ballasts, burned out light bulbs, unstop drains, replace toilets, rebuild faucets, install and repair screens, etc.
Must also be knowledgeable in preparation of preventative maintenance schedules and performance of scheduled P.M. Knowledge of furniture assembly and disassembly is required. This position is also required to assist in emergencies relating to the operation and repair of hospital mechanical equipment
Critical thinker, solution oriented, safe and efficient. Good motor coordination is necessary when giving assistance such as pipe cutting, wood cutting, painting, and electrical work; must have good manual dexterity to handle equipment, ladders, power tools and hand tools; m Skills: Works with electrical, mechanical and or other complex systems. Must be able to prioritize work and complete tasks independently with or without supervision. Must have a valid Hawaii driver’s license and be insurable per SH Risk Management
Push/pull up to 50 pounds. Crawl into tight spaces located throughout the buildings and grounds. Reaching above, at or below shoulder height. Work on ladders, man lifts, and scaffolding. Involves power grasping (opening containers, manipulating bolts / valves / switches, lifting large items, working with tools). Use fine motor skills (fine adjustment, small part manipulation, assembling items). Performance of duties will require bending, stooping, crawling, kneeling, twisting, lifting, squatting, pushing/pulling, sitting, standing, walking.
Some tasks may include heavy physical lifting of 60 pounds or more, bending, pushing, pulling, stooping, walking, climbing, and crawling. ▪Must meet the basic health requirements of Kahi Mohala’s physical examination including 2-Step TB skin test or chest x-ray.
