Security Officer II- Sheriff's Department, Court House Security

This is a non-law enforcement position within the Sheriff's Office. The Security Officers are responsible for the general security of the Circuit Courthouse and the custody of prisoners that are brought before the Court.

Performs technical level security work under regular supervision from a technical superior. Work includes maintaining security at assigned locations and guarding inmates or detainees held relative to criminal or administrative court proceedings.


Opening and closing of the Circuit Courthouse at the required times

Provide security at the main entrance of Circuit Courthouse, via operating the Metal Detector, X-ray machine, and hand scanner if necessary

Provide direction to the General Public as needed

Maintain control of Circuit Courthouse flags

Operation of lock-up area, including custody of all prisoners brought before the Court, sentenced, and held on charges for other agencies or arrested

Operation of the Circuit Courthouse alarm system, including court rooms, chambers and other areas

Test and reset of alarms for Circuit Courthouse as required

Operation of the Circuit Courthouse camera system

Process all prisoners into the lock-up computer system

LiveScan Fingerprinting and photograph of all arrested persons, inventory of personal property, fingerprint receipts, arrest reports and all other required reports

LiveScan Fingerprinting of persons for job applications

Operation of the Security elevator for court purposes, including accompanying prisoners to court area, Clerk's Office, and sally-port

Inspection of cell area for contraband and or damage

General cleaning of cell areas after prisoners have been removed from lock-up

Search all prisoners that enter the lock-up for weapons and or contraband

Maintain transport equipment used by all agencies using the lock-up

Inspection of all locks that are controlled by the lock-up panel, as well as cell door locks

Assist with alarm system inspection and maintenance of the Circuit Court.

Provide security to the Judge's Chambers area of the Courthouse

Continued check of Courthouse ID and Bar Card ID for Chambers area

Maintain security at Circuit Courthouse until all proceedings are completed, regardless of time

Maintain observation of cleaning crew during after-hours work

Maintain after-hours log book of all persons to enter the Circuit Courthouse

Aid in the evacuation of Courthouse during alarms, fire, bomb, etc.

Provide access to secure areas for work crews (County and private)

Receive and scan all mail delivered to Circuit Courthouse.

Maintain communication with the Court room Deputies for prisoner request

Make bank deposits for the Sheriff's Office to County Finance Office

Maintain a regular inspection of all fire extinguishers in the Circuit Courthouse

Ability to work the Office telephone system and direct calls where needed

Knowledge of Court forms and the terms used by the Court system

This job has no supervisory responsibilities. Other duties may be assigned.


High School Diploma or GED, 21 years of age.


Experience in law enforcement and/or corrections preferred.

Inclement Weather Conditions: This position is considered essential emergency personnel and the employee is expected at the work assignment unless otherwise advised.


Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedures manuals. Ability to write reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of the organization.

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.


U.S. citizenship or possession of an Alien registration Receipt Card. Class C Maryland Driver's License. Certified in the use of the expandable baton. Certification by the Maryland Correctional Officers Training Commission may be required.
