Position Summary

Perform one-to-one and group substance abuse counseling with clients. Develop treatment plans, write clear and objective behavioral case documentation, provide case management services, be aware of community services currently available to clients, and document incidents. All chemical dependency services must be performed under the supervision of a Qualified Credentialed Professional. Work requires basic concern for quality of care and helping the drug abuser and belief in human potential for positive growth, as well as a willingness to coordinate and work cooperatively with others. Flexible schedule. MUST have a Counselor Intern status or certification.

Essential Job Functions

1. Communicating effectively with clients, listening , counseling, observing, and providing guidance, using a variety of therapeutic techniques to provide a multi-phase growth process, emphasizing the reality of the clients life predicaments, attitudes, motivations, and ways to change.

2. Documenting casework in a timely manner in compliance with agency policies and procedures, including writing objective case notes, progress and discharge reports, and other timely status reports as requested by the supervisor and according to DSHS & Joint Commission standards.

3. Assuring clients' compliance with agency policies, procedures, and regulations, including obtaining urine samples from clients.

4. Keeping abreast of current literature and developments in the field, and attending required agency training.

5. Teaching relevant knowledge about living skills, drugs, their effects, and social attitudes and laws about drug use. Conducting group therapy, educational, group session. Conduct individual session.

6. Coordinating clients' referrals with the supervisor and others for continuation of services as required, coordinating appointments and arranging transportation for clients for essential services.

7. Complete discharge paperwork and follow up on clients 60 days after discharge.

8. Representing the agency by speaking before the public on drug abuse issues and attending meetings, as requested. Participate in staffing within the agency and maintain collaborative relationship with referral sources.

9. Maintaining program operations according to written policies and procedures, and reporting problems and progress to the supervisor.

10. Inspecting and keeping facility free from unauthorized people, drugs, weapons and other contraband materials, as needed. Active pursuit of licensure as a chemical dependency counselor (LCDC). Perform other duties as assigned.

It is expected that the incumbent shall perform other duties as assigned within his/her capabilities as determined by management.

Desired Skills and Experience

* Computer literate and be proficient in computer skills including knowledge or Microsoft Office.

* Excellent telephone and human relations skills; proven ability to organize and maintain an office system and implement procedures.

* Bilingual preferred, English/Spanish.

* Type 60 words per minute with accuracy.

* Good planning and organization skills.

* Ability to document and compile information and reports.

* Ability to effectively interact and work cooperatively as a team member with people from a variety of socio-economic and ethnic backgrounds.

* Ability to maintain confidentiality.

* Warm and friendly personality. Compassionate in accomplishing the objectives and goals of the assigned facility.

* Ability to express self in a clear, concise, understandable manner, both orally and in writing.

* Possess excellent oral and communication skills.

Education and Experience Requirements

* Must be designated as a Counselor Intern by the Texas Department of State Health Services.

* Associates Degree in Social Services, Human Relations, Social Science, Psychology or related field from a university from a regionally accredited college/university

* One (1) year work experience in drug abuse treatment setting

* High School Diploma or GED, and (2) two years experience in drug abuse treatment setting

* Any combination of education and experience that can be demonstrated to be applicable to the duties listed in the job description

Post Hire Requirements

Must successfully complete annual in-service training requirements.
