Phlebotomist

POSITION SUMMARY:

Obtains venous, arterial, and capillary blood samples from identified patients, labels and returns sample (s) to the laboratory in a timely manner. Phlebotomists may, under supervision, perform waived testing, certain laboratory procedures, i.e., glucose meters, I-stat determinations and EKG’s. Meets CLIA regulation 493.1423.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES:

Quality of Job Performance

* Able to perform venous, arterial, capillary draws on adult and pediatric / neonatal patients as per procedure and without supervision.

* Identifies patients and labels all tubes, as per policy, without mislabeling (1 mislabeling= 2)

* Draws the correct amount and in the correct tubes/preserves specimens as needed to minimize redraws

* Draws and delivers blood to the lab in a timely manner

* Follows through on collections that have been re-scheduled

* Responds to patient codes as necessary.

* Performs other laboratory related duties as assigned.

Technique

* Selects appropriate type of needle based on patient’s physical needs and/or age

* Selects appropriate site. Rarely uses superficial veins

* Wears gloves and washes hands as per policy / Follows isolation procedures

* Uses correct order of draw and releases tourniquet after 1 minute.

* Minimizes rejection of specimens due to hemolysis, clotting, inadequate filling, wrong skin prep, etc

* No more than 3 complaints /year injury to the patient, i.e. hemotoma, swelling, leaving tourniquet on, or leaving supplies in the room.

* Completes collections within timeframe – 10-15 per hour / + or – 30 min of requested time for routines/ 10min for STATS

JOB REQUIREMENTS:

POSITION EDUCATION/QUALIFICATIONS:

Education: High School graduate or G.E.D. certificate required.

Licensure/Certification: Graduate of a phlebotomy course and/or PBT (ASCP) preferred.

JOB KNOWLEDGE/EXPERIENCE:

Experience: 1 year continuous experience preferred.

Essential Technical/Motor skills: Able to adjust and/or troubleshoot monitoring equipment, and computer equipment.

Must be able to interact and communicate with all levels of staff, physicians, patients, and families in an effective manner. Exhibits tact, enthusiasm, and patience. Must be sensitive to cultural and bilingual issues, and be able to read, write, and speak English language fluently.
