To drive and champion Novartis Pharma business growth by proactively developing and maintaining key external alliances while ensuring external & internal collaboration and alignment and enhancing functional alliance leadership capabilities within Pharma and across Novartis enterprise
About 50% of Novartis revenue originates from partnered assets and in Pharma we have over 150 alliances under management
Your responsibilities include, but not limited to:
Optimization of Key External Alliances:
•Direct management of a full range of designated alliances across a spectrum of both complexity and strategic importance
•Ensure strong internal and inter-company management of the alliance through collaboration and alignment with internal functions following the Novartis AM Operating Model and Partnering Team Model
•Drive joint planning and execution of operational project activities at appropriate governance team levels (like joint project team, etc.)
•Facilitate internal and inter-company decision making (rather than operational activities) at senior level governance teams
•Realize or maximize value of collaboration through appropriate expert level tools, e.g. well executed launch, well ran internal and governance team meetings, conflict resolution, dispute escalation.
•Business partner for the internal project and commercial alliance teams.
•Builds internal knowledge and understanding of deal and collaboration related information (e.g. contract, background for the deal structure and terms)
Alliance Conflict Management and Resolution
•Guide internal/external team members in resolution of collaboration conflicts and acts as a resource for alliance team on complex alliances
•Manage collaboration challenges proactively through issue identification, management of difficult conversations, mediation and constructive issue escalation and resolution. Able to manage highly complex alliance interactions.
General Business Development Functions
•Consult deal team early in deal process by raising awareness of expected alliance complexities and potential risks and ensure appropriate controls.
•Actively participate in deal negotiation process together with DD Head and future project owner (e.g. GPH) to shape future collaboration goals and be ready for smooth integration/ transition from “Day One” (after closing).
•Lead business growth through alliance risk management, identification of appropriate opportunities for renegotiations of collaborations and leads negotiations within ongoing collaborations.
•Manage stakeholders, present to internal leadership teams and drive internal consensus on opportunities or issue resolutions.
•Adhere to internal BD&L processes to ensure quality and consistency of all BD&L activities in accordance with process guidelines.
•Responsible for termination agreements of existing agreements.
•Strong competency in managing complex interactions between multiple parties including strategic discussions, creative problem-solving and conflict resolution
•Good knowledge across the entire cross-functional value chain of drug development (i.e. from research through development to commercialization support-ed by strong financial and legal knowledge)
•Exemplifies broad understanding of full range of alliance portfolio and skills
•Able to strongly represent the alliance management function within the BU and drive excellence
•Possess a strong ability to influence internal and external stakeholders in complex and matrixed environment and decisions throughout collaboration lifecycle
•Strengthen the alliance / collaboration culture within internal teams but also within senior management
•Enforce discipline that established governance structures are used for appropriate issue resolution and decision making and not for managing operational activities.
•Demonstrate the ability to navigate through the matrix including multiple very diverse partners (NIBR, Development, Commercial, Senior Management, external Biotech CEO’s and Investors) to guide the collaboration through key milestones.
•Ability to early identify and raise collaboration issues of risks and opportunities for management awareness and decision making to ensure Novartis remains a good partner and to ensure that the collaboration objectives are optimized.
•Proactively captures best practices and looks for opportunities to scale learnings and synergies across alliance portfolio
•Translates alliance understanding into insights for strategic alliance management
•Around 50% of Novartis current in market sales come from external collaboration. Excellence in alliance management is essential for Novartis to realize the anticipated value of deals made, and to establish Novartis as a Partner of Choice for current and future deals.

University degree required; PhD, MD, or MBA preferred

•Partnerships: Working with internal and external partners to drive achievement of collaboration goals. Leading external alliances for min. 5 years
•Cross-functional collaboration - Experience in leading teams across functions, geographies, locations, business units, portfolios and P&L’s.
•Functional breadth – Experience and understanding of a range of key functions across an organization. Specific experience in BD&L, development or commercial in pharma / healthcare would be advantage
•Industry / business exposure – Experience across a range of different industries and business sectors would be plus
•Managing Conflict – Effectively managed difficult situations and driving towards constructive resolution.
•Critical negotiations - Managing negotiations which are key to the business or organization's future.
