RTI’s Division for Comprehensive Health Innovation, Research, & Policy is seeking qualified candidates for a full-time Research Programmer/Analyst with database programming experience. The Research Programmer/Analyst will work with researcher teams to analyze and organize complex qualitative and quantitative clinical, financial, and administrative data from multiple sources, and to synthesize results into meaningful reports. This role will provide analytic development and statistical programming expertise to projects conducting research using healthcare data, especially large and complex health insurance claims, and survey data, in a fast-paced environment.

This position can be in one of the following RTI regional office: Research Triangle Park, NC; Waltham, MA; Washington, DC; Atlanta, GA; Rockville, MD; Chicago, IL; Berkeley, CA.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Analyzing complex healthcare claims data, to build analytic datasets and perform statistical analyses in support of a variety of public health and healthcare financing projects.
  • Constructing analytic datasets using SQL to process claims data stored in relational databases, and producing output – reports, tables, and figures – driven by project-specific needs.
  • Assisting in the preparation of analytic results in the form of client reports, journal manuscripts, and abstracts/posters for professional meetings.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • BS/BA or advanced degree in computer science, statistics, social sciences, health policy or related field with at least 10 years of programming experience OR the equivalent combination of education and experience. Equivalent combination of education and experience is defined as a Master’s degree in the same areas mentioned above and 6 years of relevant experience.
  • Minimum of 8 years of SQL programming experience, working with data stored in relational databases such as Teradata, Snowflake, DB2, Oracle, or SQL server is required
  • Experience designing and implementing flexible, reusable, scalable, computationally efficient and easily maintainable programming code for use across multiple projects
  • Commitment to analytic programming quality and best-practices, including experience with QA/QC procedures (e.g., peer review of code, parallel programming)
  • Familiarity with all phases of the Software Development Life Cycle
  • Strong written and oral English-language skills, the ability to meet deadlines in a fast-paced multitasking environment, the ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Proficiency with Windows applications
  • To qualify, applicants must be legally authorized to work in the United States and have lived in the United States for at least 3 of the last 5 years.

Preferred Qualifications:

    • Five (5) years of programming experience using SAS with strong skills in linkage of various types of data files.
    • Mainframe experience, including TSO and JCL
    • Healthcare industry experience, research experience in contract work with the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) and/or knowledge of healthcare terminology and taxonomy/classification systems (e.g., ICD-10, CPT, HCPCS)
    • Experience with Linux/Unix
