  • PURPOSE OF JOB: To perform, under the responsibility and supervision of an Orthopedic Surgeon, diagnostic and therapeutic tasks allowing the physician to extend his/her services. The PA assists the Physician through the most effective use of his/her knowledge and decision-making, helping to coordinate preadmission clearances, establish diagnosis and to plan subsequent therapy. He/she may assist in gathering the data necessary to implement the therapeutic plan throughout the continuum of care. A major role will be as a patient's advocate in the medical care system serving as an advisor and liaison.
  • Assists the physician in the preadmission, care and work-up of patients.
  • Assists the physician in the inpatient care of patients
  • Participates in the Orthopedic Institute and Health system initiatives


  • Assists the physician in the preadmission, care and work-up of patients
  • Carries out all the duties related to the preadmission process for elective inpatient orthopedic patients
  • Arranges appropriate clinical testing and consultations as per protocol or after consultation with the orthopedic physician
  • Serves as a liaison between health system, physician and patient.
  • Collects and analyzes clinical data.
  • Documents in the medical record according to guidelines.
  • Writes routine orders.
  • Completes informative discussion with patient and family regarding patient care and treatment during the hospital course
  • Assist with discharge and or post- surgical planning
  • Demonstrates sound clinical judgment and ability to make decisions
  • Assists the physician in the inpatient care of patients
  • Knowledgeable in the recognition of change in the patient medical condition
  • Informs the physician of all changes in the patient's condition, when necessary
  • Assess the patient's treatment course and prescribes and implement indicated therapy/treatments/consults
  • Communicates with appropriate consultants in regards to patient's needs
  • Collects and analyzes clinical data
  • Documents in the medical record according to guidelines
  • Communicates patient progress to appropriate consultants
  • Communicates appropriately with staff(nursing/ navigator/therapist) in regards to patient care.
  • Communicates appropriate information to patient and significant others
  • Will provide follow up care as indicated.
  • Participates in Department and Health system initiatives
  • Participates in program initiatives as directed
  • Interacts with Director of Orthopedics in carrying out program specific services
  • Participates in committee meetings as required

Job Qualifications:

  • Education:

Must be a graduate of an accredited physician assistant program

Licensed in the State of Pennsylvania

Must have BLS certification

NCCPA certification

PA license for Prescriptive Authority

PECOS certification

  • Experience

One year of experience in hospital or general medicine preferred

Excellent customer service skills

Attention to detail

Ability to manage changing clinical situations

Ability to work individually and as part of a team
