Breaking news reporter

Gannett Co. Inc. Des Moines, IA
The Des Moines Register is seeking a breaking news reporter to cover crime, fires, traffic accidents, weather disasters and other spot news in central Iowa and to travel across Iowa for big news. He or she also will have the opportunity to handle some courts coverage.

This reporter must be adept at taking photos and video and will file quickly across platforms: mobile, desktop and social media.

There is also significant opportunity to develop enterprise and investigative work, whether snagging exclusive interviews with disaster survivors or developing sophisticated analysis of crime trends. Database skills are a plus.

Clear, fast writing is essential, along with the ability to turn breaking news coverage into readable storytelling. Source development will be critical, cultivating contacts among first responders, police, judges and court staff.

The breaking news reporter will use live chats, social media, video and other tools to replace or supplement traditional story forms. He or she will use metrics to understand what's resonating with readers and will shape coverage to steadily increase audience. Duties include writing compelling headlines and employing SEO best practices to draw in readers.

While days and hours can vary, this reporter generally works an afternoon and evening shift, Monday through Friday.

Candidates must have a college degree and prior professional journalism experience or significant internship experience.
