Summary:

Provide maintenance support to troubleshoot, calibrate and maintain all electrical and pneumatic instrumentation and control systems used in the production of electric and steam power.

Essential Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Recognizes safety hazards and follows safety guidelines for personal protection, protection of fellow workers and the protection of the public.
  • Knowledgeable of environmental rules and regulations, and effectively apply them to all work situations.
  • Performs routine and emergency repairs of plant equipment.
  • Installs, calibrates, tests, troubleshoots and maintains protective relays, computers, metering, monitoring and control systems on HRSG’s, gas turbines, generators and plant auxiliary equipment. In shop location this includes performing benchwork and component troubleshooting.
  • Uses test equipment (oscilloscopes, multi-meters, electronic bridges, loop calibrators) and hand tools necessary to troubleshoot and maintain devices and systems in the plant.
  • Communicates condition of equipment and status of jobs to supervision, operations, other craft personnel, and outside service representatives.
  • Reads and interprets instruction manuals, blueprints and control system drawings; applies knowledge to daily tasks.
  • Completes all written and electronic records (i.e. work orders, calibration sheets, time cards, material requests) required to document the work in progress and as it is completed.
  • Continually updates knowledge of plant systems and instrumentation.
  • Makes decisions about how best to repair equipment and what resources (tools, time, equipment) will be needed.
  • Assist in providing skill enhancement training to other personnel.
  • Coordinates work activities with other crafts or contractors.
  • Order proper materials for job completion.
  • Perform routine cleaning of work area.
  • Recognizes safety hazards and follows safety guidelines.

Education:

  • High School Diploma, GED or equivalent knowledge of English, mathematics and grammar.
  • Must have completed at least two (2) years of formal training in electronics, instrumentation, engineering or a related technical discipline or achieved journey level I&C Technician designation in IBEW 66.

Experience:

  • Four (4) years industrial experience in electronics repair and calibration
  • OR
  • Two (2) years military experience in electronics repair and calibration may be substituted for formal training
  • OR
  • Five (5) years (including Apprentice Training Program) of industrial Instrument and Control maintenance experience in the repair, inspection, calibration and troubleshooting of related power plant equipment.
  • Knowledge of electricity, voltage and current relationships.
  • Ability to read in English & understand technical manuals, classroom materials and electrical and mechanical drawings.
  • Possess a valid TWIC Card (Transportation Workers Identification Card)

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Knowledge and experience in the following equipment and control systems:
    • GE7EA Gas Turbines
    • Heat Recovery Steam Generators
    • GE Mark VIe Controls System
    • ABB Harmony/Symphony plus DCS
    • Baily Infi 90 hardware

Additional Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Ability to learn site specific mechanical & electrical control equipment and basic power plant equipment operation.
  • Ability to use basic mathematics including algebra & geometry to take measurements and perform computations required for installation and calibration of equipment.
  • Ability to operate & use such test equipment as multimeters, loop calibrators, frequency devices, megger and oscilloscopes.
  • Ability to use hand tools such as wrenches, screwdrivers & small power tools.
  • Ability to use a PC and learn associated software.
  • Knowledge of handling and disposal of waste material generated by maintenance activities.
  • Good mechanical aptitude
  • Ability to Lock Out/Tag Out equipment per NRG’s LOTO procedure
  • Ability to influence others toward action or a particular point of view.
  • Ability to accept responsibility for crew activities.
  • Ability to work successfully in a team environment.
  • Self-motivated to train and learn additional skills to support the plant and job requirements.
  • Ability to operate Company vehicles and equipment such as forklifts and maintain operating licenses and certifications.
  • Must have a valid state driver’s license.

Physical Requirements:

  • Power Plant Environment-Work both inside and outside in all temperatures and climate conditions in accordance with Heat Stress procedures. Around large rotating equipment, energized electrical equipment in high noise areas, and/or in confined places, on elevations in excess of 250 feet, or from platforms at heights of 5 feet or greater. Climb stairways, ladders, and work from aerial devices.
  • Must be prepared to work irregular or rotating shifts and respond to emergency callout 7 days a week, 24 hours a day.
  • Ability to work in mentally stressful environments: must be able to react to crises where immediate action is required to correct or curtail potentially damaging or hazardous situations.
  • Daily work expectation requires ability to perform tasks by walking, standing, sitting, kneeling, crouching, squatting, twisting, pushing, pulling, shoveling, climbing, and working with hand tools (up to 25 pounds) in position above and below head, and extended from body to complete repairs.
  • Lift, carry, position and use tools and/or equipment (weighing up to 50 lbs.) in awkward positions, swing various weights of sledge hammers, stoop and bend to reach valves, pull on chain-falls or come-a-longs.
  • Ability to twist upper body, reach above head and extend reach in front of body to work on equipment.
  • Ability to twist the body and neck while driving company vehicles or operating company equipment.
  • Performance of duties may cause frequent jarring of the body.
  • Work with and around hazardous and non-hazardous materials (reference the waste management guidance manual).
  • Must be able to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) as required i.e.…steel-toed boots, respirators, goggles, safety glasses etc.
  • Ability to wear full-face respirators while wearing various protective devices.
  • Have ability to discern and respond to verbal and auditory signals.
  • Ability to discern assorted colors

Working Conditions:

Normal office environmental and/or power plant environment out-of-doors work environment. Out-of-doors environment at generating plant work locations includes:

  • Work in and around rotating equipment, high voltage electrical equipment, high noise areas and elevations up to 150 feet.
  • Work in all temperatures and climatic conditions. Some temperatures can be extreme.
  • Work in confined spaces, some requiring the use of respirator protective equipment.
  • Performance of duties requires response to calls 24 hours/day, seven days/week and working irregular shifts.
  • Emergency situations will require the use of a respirator and climbing stairs to reach safety shelters.
  • Establish facial hair in the sealing area of a respirator is not permitted.
  • Contact lenses are not permitted except for specific medical reasons.
  • Substantial footwear must be worn in accordance with the current Safety Shoe Policy.
