Direct Support Professional One on One Inclusion Specialist

MV Advancements Dallas, OR
MV Advancements is a local non-profit that has successfully enriched the lives of individuals experiencing developmental disabilities in Yamhill, Marion and Polk counties for 50 years. We are introducing a new level of support through our Direct Support Professional Inclusion Specialist position! Different from traditional roles in group settings, Direct Support Professional Inclusion Specialists (a.k.a. Inclusion Specialists) connect with clients one on one in their jobs and out and about in the community to help them achieve goals and explore interests.

The possibilities in this position are limited only by the aspirations and wishes of the individuals we serve.

So what is this job? An Inclusion Specialist is matched to a client based on the client's needs and requests. From there an average day could include any or all of the following:

* Being present as a resource during employment hours, generally assisting in overcoming obstacles to success if and when they arise.

* Brainstorming and researching interests, such as education, skill development, and hobbies.

* Planning activities, such as what to do, who to connect with, and how to get there.

* Attending events both private and public, such as visiting an old friend or going to a concert.

Opportunities to be an Inclusion Specialist are varied and flexible. Static needs include being an alert and responsive presence alongside a client for regularly scheduled hours each week at their place of employment. Variety and flexibility include connecting with up to 10 clients (5 on average) each week to arrange for and attend activities and events. Responsibilities can be as simple as understanding an individual's medical needs and preventing emergencies, and as varied as helping clients overcome barriers to exploring new hobbies, including learning and experiencing new things and making new friends.

In short this job is: Providing a professional presence and services as a trained support provider in employment and enrichment settings, assisting as needed. Tasks may include, but are not limited to assisting with: transporting, shopping, managing spending money, dispensing medications, documentation, assisting in recreation, personal hygiene, toileting as needed, and supporting independence.

This job is not: Babysitting, life-coaching, or driving someone towards our own ideas of fun and achievement.

General Characteristics for Success as an Inclusion Specialist:

* Adaptability: This role supports lives. Life can be unpredictable.

* Patience: Passion and energy are welcome, especially when paired with composure and a heart for service.

* Selflessness: The individuals we serve are adults. As service providers, our role is to help them explore, express and obtain their own personal objectives.

* Positivity: Would you want to spend significant amounts of time with someone negative, critical, or obnoxious? We think no.

* Advanced professional-level relational, interpersonal and customer service skills.

* Proven experience reading, writing and speaking English effectively in business communication.

* A heart for service with the willingness to promote the needs of others and the ability to work independently.

* Proven teamwork and collaboration skills, including promoting open communication and advancing team goals.

* Must pass all levels of Core Competencies within 90 days of employment

* Must pass OIS (Oregon Intervention Systems) training within 90 days of employment (MVA provides training)

* 18 years of age or older, possess a current valid driver's license with a driving record of 2 or more years of safe and responsible driving, and able to provide proof of eligibility to work in the United States at time of hire.

Please Note! There are times and situations in which a client needs low levels of hands-on support, such as having an Inclusion Specialist as a general presence to assist with infrequent concerns at unpredictable intervals. At these times, while remaining professional, alert, and undisruptive, it is generally acceptable for the Inclusion Specialist to engage in activities of their own interests. Examples might include studying for an exam, reading, sketching, or drafting lengthy reviews of the controversial new Star Wars films. Work-related expectations will always take precedence during times of limited activity, such as position training and development. Of course, no activities should be conducted that would reflect poorly on our clients or the programs and establishments that support them. This means no illegal or unprofessional activities to include sleeping on the job.
