Patient Access Specialist II & I - Admitting - FT-VARIED SHIFTS

This position is a combined position that is 64 hours per pay period working as a Patient Access Specialist II and 16 hours per pay period working as a Patient Access Specialist I.

Acts as initial contact for patients being scheduled, registered and admitted to the hospital and verifies insurance, coverage, obtains authorizations, discusses financial arrangements and collects payments from patients prior to receiving services

For Patient Access Specialist II

* Greets, assists and directs incoming patients, visitors, physicians and staff as appropriate

* Provides and promotes professional, efficient and congenial customer service through all communication and interaction with patients, clients, guests, co-workers, physicians and their office staff and with the public, both in person and on the phone

* Schedules, registers and/or pre-admits patients to their appropriate appointment, status, collects all necessary signatures and information; provides notice of non-coverage/waivers

* Takes patient payments, forwards to cashier and balances cash box(es) at the end of shift

* Understands emergency systems; i.e., fire, security, disaster, and in-house emergencies and responds appropriately

* Operates and updates hospital computerized switchboard console, evaluates appropriateness of requests for overhead pages, responds to security computer system and performs physician message system duties

* Verifies eligibility, coverage, address, obtains authorizations and provides admission notification, determines patient financial liability and counsels regarding payment arrangements, hospital bill reduction and collects payments

* Explains rates, charges, services, discounts, contracts and hospital policy regarding payment of bills to patients and families

* Calls patients being admitted to the hospital prior to the admission date and collects required information at the time of scheduling appointment according to requirements of department and prepares department schedule for department staff

* Reviews denials and rejections or other admission benefit/authorization issues

* Determines insurance coverage and necessity of authorization

* Provides Pharmacy Optimization by working with Medsource and other financial assistance programs for pharmacy reimbursement related to chemo and infusion therapy

* Performs data entry

* Complies with Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) guidelines

* Complies with Emergency Medical Treatment and Active Labor Act (EMTALA) guidelines

* Assists in training staff

* Maintains current knowledge of third party payer guidelines and insurance contracts and performs follows-up with insurance carriers in appropriate manner and time frame

* Assists Utilization Review, house supervisor and physicians' offices regarding appropriateness of an inpatient status versus outpatient status

For Patient Access Specialist I (in addition to Patient Access Specialist II)

* May call patients being admitted to the hospital prior to the admission date

* Schedules patient and collects required information at time of scheduling appointment according to requirements of department and prepares department schedule for department staff

* Collects pertinent data on patients, such as test, exam, services, diagnoses, demographic and insurance information

* May provide estimates for walk-in or unscheduled patients

Minimum Requirements

* Demonstrates the ability to use a personal computer and various software programs applicable to the position

* Demonstrates the ability to operate applicable office equipment

* Exhibits the ability to deal effectively interdepartmentally & with the public

* Exhibits the ability to maintain confidentiality, think and act independently with minimal supervision

* Maintains regular, consistent and punctual attendance at the assigned job location

* Associate or higher degree preferred

* Two years registration experience in medical setting preferred
