Definition

Under direction, is responsible for performing difficult to complex professional engineering work and/or supervising professional and technical engineering staff; performs related duties as required.

The preferred candidate will serve as the Traffic Control Engineer within the Division of Traffic Management of the Department of Public Service. The incumbent will focus on operational issues related to maintenance of traffic, pavement markings, traffic signage, and other traffic engineering and safety issues.

Examples of Work

Directs the activities of an engineering unit involved in the planning, design, construction, maintenance or operation of Capitol Improvement Projects and/or private developments;

Supervises engineering staff involved in major construction and/or maintenance projects or consultant studies; organizes and assigns work of a project nature; develops the procedures to be used; evaluates the work of subordinate personnel and, at times, outside consulting firms;

Reviews and inspects construction, maintenance, installation, and consultant work to ensure feasibility and adherence to departmental standards, policies and specifications; amends current plans and specifications to suit existing conditions as needed;

Represents the division in special project and area civic association meetings as well as meetings with state, county and municipal organizations, consulting engineering groups and contractors;

Stays abreast of current engineering principles;

Directs the preparation of plans, specifications, bids and cost estimates; prepares, reviews, and/or oversees contracts;

Operates a computer and mapping software to draw and review maps and plans;

Assists with the preparation of the budget for the division;

Responds to requests or complaints from the public by way of telephone or in writing;

Supervises the design of moderately difficult to complex structures, facilities, systems and equipment;

May serve as an Engineer IV in his/her absence.

Minimum Qualifications

Possession of a valid State of Ohio certificate as a registered Professional Engineer and three (3) years of professional engineering experience which includes some supervisory experience over professional engineers or engineering projects. Substitution(s): Possession of a valid State of Ohio certificate as a registered Professional Engineer (P.E.) and nine (9) years of practical engineering experience, which includes two (2) years of experience supervising professional engineers or engineering projects.

Specialization in the discipline for which appointment is being made may be required for some positions and will be incorporated in the job postings, as appropriate.

Possession of a valid motor vehicle operator's license.

SPECIAL NOTE:

Professional experience is defined as responsible and significant engineering work performed after registration as a Professional Engineer (P.E.). Practical experience is defined as responsible and significant engineering work performed after graduation from an accredited, degreed engineering curriculum.
