Overview

The Medical Laboratory Technician I is part of the provider care team who helps with diagnosis, treatment, and monitoring of patient conditions through the use of technical and scientific knowledge. This position is responsible for accurate, precise, and timely performance of laboratory tests. The Medical Laboratory Technician I evaluates and reports test results while assuring compliance and meeting all regulatory requirements consistent with the quality of a World Class Laboratory. The Medical Laboratory Technician I will be required to exhibit excellent customer service skills in line with Mercy Signature Service in all internal and external customer interactions. This position includes ON CALL TIME.

Responsibilities

Maintains records regarding samples and specimens collected and sent to other labs for analysis.Assists with the maintenance of required records and statistics of all procedures, tests, etc., performed in the hospital lab.Draws blood from patients and performs tests ordered by physician.Performs EKG's as ordered by physicians.Takes call as scheduled for the lab.Accepts responsibility individually and collectively for the performance of the team and department. Volunteers to assist team members, changes schedule when asked by the Supervisor, sets appropriate priorities and uses good time management skills. Overtime is kept to a minimum and must be approved by the Supervisor/Manager.Continues self-development through reading, workshops, etc., and keeps current of changes in the profession.Makes all necessary hospital cultures at the proper intervals, such as the autoclave, the dietary department, patient rooms, floors, hallways, etcAssists with drug screens in the absence of the Occupational Medicine personnel.Attends in-service education as required.Assumes responsibility for the completion of testing in the absence of the Manager of Laboratory Services and the Laboratory Supervisor.Prepares tissue for pick-up by St. Johns courier.Informs the Supervisor of any supplies that need to be ordered through the Purchasing Agent.Assists with drug screens in the absence of the Occupational Medicine personnel.Reports any problems or malfunctions with the equipment to the Supervisor or Lab Manager.Abides by the dress code established by the department.Performs other duties as assigned by the Lab Supervisor or Lab Manager.
