Please Note

The Department of Engineering and Capital Projects has one full time vacancy to be filled at either the Engineering Technician I level or Engineering Technician II level, based on the evaluation of the applicant's qualifications and needs of the department. If hired at the Engineering Technician I level, movement to the Engineering Technician II level is neither implied nor guaranteed.

Salary Range

Engineering Technician I: $4,413.20 - $5,364.26 Monthly

Engineering Technician II: $4,854.50 - $5,900.68 Monthly

Engineering Technician I

To perform routine technical and paraprofessional engineering support work in the field or office; provide support to engineering project managers in the planning, design and construction management of assigned projects; provide information to general public; and perform related duties as assigned. This is the entry-level class in the Engineering Technician series. The Engineering Technician I class is distinguished from the II level by the performance of less than the full range of duties assigned to the II level. Incumbent works under immediate supervision while learning job tasks, progressing to general supervision as procedures and processes of assigned area of responsibility are learned.

Engineering Technician II

To perform a wide variety of technical and paraprofessional engineering support work in the field or office; may perform lead assignments involving coordination of specific projects and studies; provide support to engineering project managers in the planning, design and construction management of assigned projects including providing information to contractors, developers, and the general public; and perform related duties as assigned. This is the full journey level class in the Engineering Technician series and it is distinguished from the Engineering Technician I level by the ability to perform the full range of duties assigned with only occasional instruction or assistance as unusual or unique situations arise. Positions in this class are flexibly staffed and are normally filled by advancement from the level I or by outside candidates having prior experience.

Functions may include, but are not limited to, the following: provide routine assistance with civil, assessment, and traffic engineering research and/or questions; assist in review of assessment district contracts and audits invoices submitted for payment; assist in the preparation of request for proposals; maintains and updates various databases; assist in investigation of engineering problems; for a detailed description of essential functions click here.

Engineering Technician II Essential Functions

Functions may include, but are not limited to, the following: perform a wide variety of technical and paraprofessional engineering support work in the field or office; may perform lead assignments involving coordination of specific projects and studies; provide support to engineering project managers in the planning, design, and construction management of assigned projects; assist in performing engineering design work for streets, storm drains, sanitary sewers, traffic signals, traffic control plans, and other public works facilities under the supervision of an Engineer; for a detailed description of essential functions click here.

Minimum Qualifications:Any combination of education and/or experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

Engineering Technician I

One year of responsible experience in field survey, drafting, or related civil engineering work AND training equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade supplemented by college courses in engineering, mathematics, drafting, surveying, computer science/CADD or related field. License or Certificate: Possession of a valid California driver's license.

Engineering Technician II

Two years of responsible experience in field survey, drafting, or related civil engineering work AND training equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade supplemented by college coursework in engineering, mathematics, drafting, surveying, computer science/CADD, or related field. An Associate's Degree is desirable. License or Certificate: Possession of a valid California driver's license.
