Manager, Trade Team - Investment Operations


The Trade Team Manager manages one or more Investment Operations Outsourcing (IOO) trade teams and is responsible for ensuring the quality of IOO middle office services delivered to one or more clients. The Trade Manager makes staffing decisions, establishes team and employee performance standards, conducts performance management reviews and helps to ensure employee developmental and training needs are achieved. The successful Trade Manager has industry subject matter expertise enabling them to understand the needs of complex and large clients and can navigate the Northern Trust service & delivery organization serving as an advocate for all IOO clients. The Trade Manager consults with clients, Client Service Managers, and the Shared Service NT service & delivery organization to deliver solutions that meet the evolving needs of NA IOO's clients.

Major Duties

* Recruit, train, mentor and develop employees.

* Learn all of the key functions that the trade team is performing for all assigned clients.

* Research, analyze and resolve complex trade matching and settlement issues. • Participate as needed on behalf of trade in client Quarterly Service Reviews, Due Diligence meetings, and other client meetings.

* Build working relationships and regular touchpoints with clients.

* Serve as a point of escalation, ensure issues are logged and work to promptly resolve client trade issues.

* Define performance standards, conduct performance reviews and handle salary administration for individuals.

* Provide management, leadership and guidance to staff, creates an environment that encourages employee engagement, teamwork, and communication.

* Develop staffing and succession plans, and ensure all team members are cross trained.

* Provide holiday coverage for at least 2 holidays per year, supervising the trade partners working the holiday.

* Proactively prepare to ensure an effective onboarding experience for new Partners.

* Create, document, maintain and improve process flows, operating procedures and controls.

* Champion, sponsor and/or participant on business and technology enhancement initiatives.

* Ensure appropriate operational controls in order to manage and mitigate risk to Northern Trust.

* Perform cost benefit and impact analysis related to new client service requests as they relate to trade.

* Responsible for analyzing trade metrics as part of oversight of the team and to provide process improvement suggestions.

* Responsible for working with peer trade managers to help create and execute a Functional Team Operating & Action Plan that seeks to improve service quality, operating efficiency and team effectiveness.

* Build relationships and meet regularly with Client Service Managers (CSMs) and NT support groups.

* Responsible for obtaining in-depth knowledge and understanding of IOO products and services and how they are manufactured and delivered.

Knowledge / Skills

* Technical knowledge of financial services, asset management and investment operations

* Experience working with DTCC Alert, CTM, TradeSuite, & Bloomberg's Fail Station preferred

* Knowledge of Equity and Fixed Income global settlements preferred

* Excellent oral and written communication skills

* Analytical and problem solving skills

* Highly flexible and adaptable to change

* Demonstrated success in coaching and developing individuals Leadership and organizational skills to develop periodic goals and to manage and motivate team members towards achieving the goals set

Experience Required

* A college or university degree and / or relevant work experience

* 3+ years of prior management experience

* 5+ years of prior Financial Industry Operations, Asset Management and / or Investment Operations middle office experience

* Previous client management and client service experience in a service oriented environment
