Job Summary

The Cost Accountant Lead applies principles of cost accounting and statistics to devise, implement, and administer systems to provide management with detailed cost data not supplied by general accounting systems. Responsible for complex cost analyses and audits. This role also acts in a lead role to other accountants.

Essential Job Duties

* Determines, records, and reports unit costs of factors affecting production, such as raw materials, labor, inventory, machine maintenance, etc.

* Analyzes changes in product design, raw materials, overhead, manufacturing methods, etc., for effects on production costs.

* Analyzes actual manufacturing costs and prepares periodic reports comparing standard to actual costs.

* Provides management with cost and comparative reports to indicate need for change in pricing or production.

* Assists in developing, installing, and maintaining cost accounting methods and procedures.

* Carries out with appreciable latitude for actions and decisions all aspects of difficult projects that are broad in nature and require originality and/or ingenuity.

* May oversee the completion of projects including planning; assigning, monitoring and reviewing progress and accuracy of work; evaluating results, etc.

* May serve as technical resource to others in the resolution of complex problems, and orient, train, assign, mentor, and review the work of lower level employees. Acts as subject matter expert in understanding and interpreting accounting principles.

* May perform other duties as required.

Scope of Responsibility

Independent; works under only minimal instructions and expected to determine how to accomplish the work assignments.

Supervisory Responsibility

This job has no supervisory responsibilities, but does act in a lead role.

Knowledge and Skill Requirements

* Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common scientific and technical journals. Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints.

* Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Uses intuition and experience to complement data.

* Ability to exercise discretion while managing confidential information.

* Knowledge of Word Processing software, Spreadsheet software, and Internet software.

Education and Experience

Bachelor's degree and a minimum of 7 years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. CPA preferred.
