* High School Diploma or equivalent, supplemented by completion of an acceptable National or South Carolina recognized apprentice-level carpentry training program;

* Five (5) years comparable experience. Nine (9) years if apprentice-level training program was not completed;

* SKILLS are required to perform single, technical tasks with a need to occasionally upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions. Specific skills required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: adhering to legal statutes, organizational rules, etc.; adhering to safety practices; operating equipment used in carpentry; planning and

managing projects; and preparing and maintaining accurate records;

* KNOWLEDGE is required to perform algebra and/or geometry; read technical information, compose a variety of documents, and/or facilitate group discussions; and solve practical problems. Specific knowledge required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job includes: use and maintenance of job related tools and equipment; safety practices and procedures; standard carpentry practices; reading blueprints and drawings; and the Uniform Building Code;

* ABILITY is required to schedule activities and/or meetings; gather and/or collate data; and consider a number of factors when using equipment. Flexibility is required to work with others in a variety of circumstances; work with data utilizing defined and similar processes; and operate equipment using a variety of processes. Ability is also required to work with a diversity of individuals and/or groups; work with similar types of data; and utilize a variety of types of job-related equipment. In working with others, Problem solving with data requires independent interpretation of guidelines; and problem solving with equipment is significant. Specific abilities required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: adapting to changing work priorities; being attentive to detail; establishing and maintaining effective working relationships; meeting deadlines and schedules; setting priorities; working with constant interruptions; and working with

detailed information/data.


* Vocational/Technical training;

* Journeyman carpentry certification



* Perform journeyman level carpentry work in the maintenance, repair, construction and alteration of District buildings and facilities – 30%.

Installs variety of built items and/ or construction materials (e.g. cabinets, ceiling, locks, windows, storage units, partitions doors, bulletin boards, etc.) for the purpose of completing projects/work orders within established time frames – 15%.

* Repairs built-in furniture, flooring, locks, cabinets, ceilings, walls, fences, ramps, sheds, stairways, athletic devices, etc. for the purpose of providing for the safe and efficient utilization of work areas – 10%.

* Cleans debris from roof sites and drains, performs preventive maintenance work to roofs, and repair and/or replace a variety of roof coverings – 10%.

* Assist in ordering, receiving and storing supplies and equipment; contact vendors to order or obtain information concerning supplies and equipment; obtain prices and determine total cost of labor and materials as assigned – 10%.

* Read and interpret blueprints, sketches or building plans for information pertaining to type of material required and dimensions of structure or fixture to be fabricated. Plan, design, and prepare paperwork for all facets of minor carpentry construction projects – 10%.

* Operate a variety of carpentry equipment such as lathes, saws, shapers, joiners, sanders, power and hand tools and a power-activated tool for driving pins into concrete and steel – 10%.


* Remodels office and work space (e.g. partitions, paneling, walls, doorways, etc.) for the purpose of providing for the efficient utilization of space and addressing cosmetic and/or safety concerns – 5%.

Physical/Mental Requirements:

Must be able to exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. Must possess strength, stamina and mobility to perform physical work. Must be willing to perform all related carpentry repair duties. Skilled in the use of tools, equipment, and methods pertinent to a wide variety of carpentry- related installation, maintenance and repair activities. Must be licensed to operate motor vehicles within the State of S.C.

HOURLY RANGE: $14.20 - $16.83 based on the 2011-2012 board approved salary schedule
