Job Overview:

Responsible fororganizing and articulating the near and long-term strategic plans formerchandising team and communicate the vision across the merchandising andmarketing organization. Provide leadership and direction to create salesdriving strategies, programs and events that lead to strong Retailer sales andprofit with corresponding strong sales and profit for SUPERVALU. Ensure theintegrity and execution of merchandising initiatives and business developmentplans for categories.

Job Responsibilities andAccountabilities:

* Analyze the changingretail environment related to specific market areas; Provide leadershipdirection and create plans to provide sales and profitability for regioncustomers and SUPERVALU.

* Leverage buying poweracross regions to realize cost savings and efficiencies.

* Maintain written goalsand objectives for all categories which support the overall budget andstrategic plans of the department. Assist direct reports in the strategic planning process.

* Partner with Marketingto build strategies to support new or existing Marketing areas to providesolutions to customers; i.e. sales or customer building initiatives,competitive intrusions

* Maintain knowledge ofshelf management. This includes overseeing establishment of procedures whichmaintain shelf management principles followed by the Shelf Management staff andthe vendor/broker community.

* Maintain understandingof the region, cluster, and retail format pricing strategies to assist theRetail Pricing department. This includesrecommending procedures to the Retail Pricing and assuring that the merchandisingstaff are guided by established procedures.

* Evaluate forward buyresults and current opportunities which remain within the establishedparameters for the distribution center to generate gross profit. Communicate with the Procurement staff tomaintain budgeted inventory levels and optimum service level.

* Coordinate with theRetail Marketing staff to provide a communication link with assigned clustersof retailers; be a resource for these retailers; and be the regional expert anda resource for other Directors of Merchandising on assigned formats (i.e.,EDLP, High/Low, Food & Drug, etc.).

* Develop promotionalprograms with the merchandising staff and vendors/brokers to increase retailsales and retail gross profits.

* Review and sign off theP&L; including income and expenses and have the ability to diagnose andresearch issues across functions to find and correct errors in the sales and grossfor the departments. Ensure SOX compliance

Job Requirements:

* Possess good leadership skillsand the ability to supervise the work of others. Must be able to motivate and work with andthrough others to achieve desires results.

* Possess excellentcommunication skills, both verbal and written. Deals effectively with a wide variety of people both in person and overthe telephone.

* Requires basic computerskills and personal computer experience, with word processing and spreadsheetapplications preferred.

* Requires the analyticalability to handle administrative duties and mental alertness to ensureaccurate, safe, and thorough completion of work activities. Possess ability to concentrate and deal withfrequent interruptions.

* Four-year degree orequivalent experience essential.

* Seven to ten yearsretail management and/or wholesale merchandising management experienceessential

* Strong strategicplanning leadership skills essential
