Mechanic Apprentice (3884)

Position Overview

Maintains, repairs, and overhauls industrial equipment. Interprets work orders and technical manuals; keeps equipment cleaned, lubricated and maintained; diagnoses faults or malfunctions; adjusts equipment and repairs or replaces defective parts, components or systems. Ensures that the work done meets manufacturers' specifications and legislated regulations. This trade follows a 4-year apprenticeship program; journeyman status requires a valid certificate of qualification issued by the state or federal authority. Mechanics may supervise apprentice mechanics.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

* Performs repairs and maintenance heavy equipment to maximize safe and productive operations.

* Typical repairs include but are not limited to, routine maintenance and repairing components, hydraulic cylinders, hydraulic systems, mechanical systems, cooling systems, gearboxes and various types of rotating assemblies.

* Tests equipment to troubleshoot problems and/or test repairs to ensure proper and safe completion.

* Inspects equipment for condition, operations, parts and fluid levels.

* Reads and interprets condition reports, and/or repair orders, communicates with supervisor for clarification of problems. May discuss preventative techniques minimize future repairs.

* Makes emergency calls to make repairs on equipment.

* Uses a large array of hand and power tools.

* Cleans parts and tools with chemical solvents

Experience and Skill Requirements

* Must be a self-starter with the ability to follow directions and work in a team environment with minimal supervision.

* Good trouble shooting and problem solving skills are required.

* Good interpersonal and communication skills are required.

* Basic personal computer and corporate standard software skills (MS Word, Excel) are required.
