General Responsibilities: As a teacher, you will be expected to plan, organize, and implement an appropriate instructional program in a learning environment that guides and encourages students to develop and fulfill their academic potential. Teachers are responsible for managing student behavior in the classroom by establishing and enforcing rules and procedures, maintain discipline in accordance with the rules and disciplinary system of the school, and applying appropriate disciplinary measures where necessary. Our teachers are an integral part of the school and the school community, performing certain pastoral duties including, but not limited to, student support, counseling students with academic problems and supporting certain extracurricular activities such as social activities, sporting activities, clubs and student organizations, participating in department and school meetings, and parent meetings. Minimum Requirements: Background in programming; Informational Technology experience Position Requirements: The Computer Science and Technology Department is in the initial stages of completing an ambitious vision of a revamped Computer Science and Technology team. Therefore, we need people who are on board with our vision and prepared to go above and beyond in accomplishing our goals. Characteristics we are looking for include: Taking initiative: Our vision is very ambitious and team members must be able to work without micromanagement. There are many projects and initiatives that we want to complete and we need enthusiastic team players. We need problem solvers. Work Ethic: Because of the ambitious direction, there is a lot of work to do and we need people who are willing to devote extra time to our end goals which means this is not considered a 9-5 position. Added Value: Each team member must add value to the group, both inside and outside of the classroom. An example of this could be participating as a teacher sponsor for technology and/or computer related clubs or competitions, leadership of technology department specific initiatives (LANschool, Canvas, Google, Network Maintenance, etc.) and school wide initiatives where technology department can add value (Preparation for Assessments). In class Differentiation: As a STEM school, many of our students are proficient and/or above proficient in many of the things we teach - especially in middle school. Therefore, we need to make sure all students are challenged. Students should be given a chance to test out of content and given more challenging assignments if they already possess the basic skills being taught. High Level Teaching: To help challenge ALL students, teach to the best student and adjust as needed. Flexible planning of units and projects to meet the needs of the variety of students in the class. Content Knowledge: As we are moving more to a Computer Science department instead of general Technology, all of the STEM School Computer Science team members must have computer science skills. Topics include programming, hardware, and operating systems. Curriculum Content: The goal is very specific in that we want to let students experience both the breadth of our computer science offerings as well as be able to dig deeper into subjects of interest. Students will be exposed to a variety of offerings in middle school so they have a better understanding of what path they may want to take in high school. Therefore it’s critical that the middle school content be taught as outlined in the adopted STEM School Computer Science curriculum. Feedback: As a new department, we are all growing our skills so we must all be receptive to feedback and willing adapt practices to address feedback. Critical Thinking: While at times, our classroom instruction must be structured, we need to create environments where students have the opportunity to creatively think and build. This is not a prescribed type of instruction. The teacher serves as a guide for the students while experimenting with the technology. Professionalism: All STEM teachers are held to a high standard of professionalism. Many of our parents are working professionals and many have at least one university degree. Therefore, our interactions and communication with the students and their parents must be held to the highest standards. Every parent request and/or e-mail must have a timely (within two business days) and professionally worded response; issues must be addressed and resolved quickly. Effective Classroom Operations and Management: Students need to be on task operating at an acceptable noise level, engaged in their projects, and behaving in a manner that is conducive to learning. Qualifications Required: Bachelor’s degree or higher from an accredited institution with a valid state teaching license and highly qualified content knowledge.
