R&D Technologist

The Dow Chemical Company has an exciting opportunity for an R&D Technologist in Carrollton, Kentucky.

Job Summary:

We're looking for a practical and highly motivated individual who enjoys scientific challenge and implementing creative improvement solutions to join the Carrollton Process R&D team. As part of the team, you will significantly contribute to technology innovation for Growth, Cost and Sustainability Improvements of the Dow Performance Silicones, Basics Siloxane technology base.

Research and development technologist work includes: constructing and operating lab scale experiments, pilot scale systems and experiments, aimed at developing and scale up of new processes. In addition you will be part of both local and global research teams, contributing ideas/research, scientific rigor and technical know-how. The successful candidate will possess great communication skills – being able to present and communicate results and progress to technical teams locally and globally.


* Commitment to safety and work to build strong safety culture in all office, laboratory and related activities.

* Build new experimental set-ups to address problems or support technology development, hazard analysis and change management as necessary.

* Develop and implement experimental plans.

* Operate laboratory and pilot process experiments (start, monitor, and shut down), record and report results and observations, and some analysis of experimental results.

* Able to analyze data and make recommendations.

* Communicates results through verbal and written reports; presents data to R&D team members.

* Actively participate in work group team meetings to address safety, process improvement, problem solving, and other work group, department, and functional topics. May also participate in functional and/or business/customer teams relevant to supported technologies.

* Train new laboratory workers in lab practices, experimental procedures, set ups and techniques.

* Support procurement of parts and raw materials for laboratory use.

* Maintain a clean and safe laboratory – e.g., applying 5S principles.

* Perform laboratory chemical waste handling and packaging.

Required Qualifications:

* Have excellent communication and team work skills.

* Hands-on approach in a laboratory and small pilot scale environment.

* Ability to work independently with high level of demonstrated project execution.

* Ability to manage multiple tasks and have a sense of prioritization based on value and efficiency.

* Self-motivated, high initiative, and good time-management skills.

* Experience writing and documenting key learning and reports.

* Understanding of laboratory operation and basic Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S) requirements such as safe operating procedures and management of change. Strong understanding and commitment to their own and the safety of others.

* A minimum requirement for this U.S. based position is the ability to work legally in the United States. No visa sponsorship/support is available for this position, including for any type of U.S. permanent residency (green card) process.

Preferred Qualifications:

* Degree in Chemistry or Engineering.

* Experience with handling and working with hazardous chemicals.

* Background in R&D/process/instrumental labs.

* Experience with small hood-scale reactors and apparatus.


* Associate degree or higher in a science field of study is required.


* 4 or more years of military training/experience in related laboratory/technical role.
