To process and analyze laboratory specimens and disseminate accurate laboratory data to health care providers

- Responsible for accurate analysis of biological fluids and human body tissues in all areas of the laboratory by the use of chemicals, reagents, complex instruments, and culture media
- Processes and analyzes specimens
- Disseminates accurate laboratory data in a format that is usable for clinicians and physicians
- Performs other specialized duties as assigned based on skill set(s) including Microbiology setups, gram stains, blood cultures, GC probes, routine culture workups/identification/susceptibility; acquires additional knowledge in Medical Technology.
- Responsible for detecting errors during testing; maintaining reagents and supplies in advance
- Maintains Quality Control by monitoring shifts, trends, and delta checks
- Performs preventative maintenance and troubleshooting on instruments with limited supervision, and other duties as assigned
- Agrees to preceptor guidelines for MLS program clinical rotations
- Duties require interaction with different patient age groups (neonate, child, adolescents, adults, and the elderly) and require recognition that different age groups require specialized care
- Performs other job duties as assigned
To Become a Medical Lab Scientist:
- Required to meet minimum eligibility requirements as defined by ASCP Board of Certification (10/23/09 or later) for Medical Laboratory Scientist, or equivalent (Refer to CLIA guidelines 493.1489b1)
- Successful completion of NAACLS accredited MLS training program preferred
- Required MLS (ASCP) certification within 6 months of hire or eligibility period
- Required participation in Certification Maintenance Program as indicated (2004 or later); ASCP licensure must remain active and current
- Must be able to read, write and speak English
