Therapeutic Recreation Specialist

Working under the administrative direction of the Director of Parks and Recreation and Recreation Program Coordinator this position oversees and implements recreation programming which is inclusive, adaptive and appropriate for children and adults with a variety of abilities.  Also responsible for marketing, budgets, intake assessments, program evaluations, seeking additional funding sources, overseeing staff/volunteers, managing and organizing program equipment, and handling and working with participant-related confidential information.  May supervise part-time and seasonal staff, interns and/or volunteers. 


Minimum requirements include:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Therapeutic Recreation or a related Recreation field

  • Certified as a Therapeutic Recreation Specialist or ability to obtain certification

  • Two years’ experience in a recreation setting

  • Experience working with populations of differing abilities, preferably in a municipal setting

  • Valid motor vehicle operator’s license

  • Current certification in CPR and First Aid preferred

  • Must be willing and able to work additional hours as programming dictates, including evenings, weekends, and holidays

  • Strong public relations skills required


This position is included within the Burlington Municipal Employees Association bargaining unit, at Grade 9.  This is a full-time position, 35-hours per week.
