Basic Function

The Profitability Group serves as a partner to senior and executive management to drive informed management and improvement for businesses, products, and customers as well as accountability for performance through the lens of profitability and return analysis.

This role will contribute individually as well as potentially manage Financial Managers/Analysts to conduct highly technical research, analysis and reporting projects that focus on profitability, cost management and analytics to provide senior management with definitive financial data and advice for their use in setting and realizing profit objectives.

Essential Position Responsibilities

Oversee the management of two or more Financial Analysis Managers who have management authority, generally at the assistant vice president and vice president level, and who are responsible for operations and projects relating to the bank's financial status for major segments.

Work with other senior and executive managers to identify emerging opportunities and issues to include, but not limited to, revenue enhancement, cost control and standardization.

Contribute to building structure for resolving complex problems across the bank.

Participate in the development and implementation of Finance department goals.

Communicate with all levels of management including management group regarding fiscal policies. Provide direction in the implementation of policies.

Organize and oversee new projects/initiatives within department or across the bank when issues or opportunities arise. Build consensus within department and across bank for important projects and issues.

Work within the department and across the bank to identify opportunities to reduce expense and/or increase revenue.

Oversee two or more Financial Analysis Managers with emphasis on the staff development, creating a framework for success, leading by example and creating opportunities for staff. Promote all management success factors.

Exercise managerial authority over staff with respect to hiring, termination, salary recommendations, and performance appraisals. Provide employee development and aligning hiring of new employees with strategic direction of department.

Nature and Scope

The position's primary responsibility is staff management, managing a minimum of two Financial Analysis Managers who are responsible for direct the day-to-day activities of a major business segment.

The position is responsible for:

* Shaping strategy - the capacity to guide analysis and discussion, and influence the outcome for key decisions.

The position has direct contact with other internal personnel at all levels including management group and business line executive and senior management.

Supervisory Responsibility

Minimum three direct reports at the Financial Analysis Managers I/II level and who are at the assistant vice president or vice president level.

Minimum Qualifications

Masters' degree in Finance, Accounting or Business Administration, or the equivalent in work experience.

Minimum ten years' finance experience including financial experience within a financial institution.

Minimum five years' managerial experience.

Technical Skills

High level of common PC competencies (Excel, PowerPoint, Word, Access) and specialized application competencies utilized by M&T (e.g. Costing tools (SAS, OROS, Oracle and/or other costing tools); Smart View/ESSBASE; Hyperion add-in; and/or Tableau Report Development

Ideal Qualifications Preferred:

Prior experience in customer/account profitability project implementations

Prior experience segmenting customers based on behavior and profitability for use in enterprise strategy

Prior experience on large scale initiatives that utilized centralized data sourcing strategies to successful outcomes.

Mastered critical thinking capability using data and other available information

Mastered ability to grasp the issue at hand, consider alternatives, consult with other if necessary and propose/recommend solutions

Mastered ability to adapt to new directions or job requirements

Mastered ability to describe both verbally and written the issues, processes, solutions at different levels of the organization and management

Mastered understanding the ask and leading others within the Management Accounting Group or within the bank to achieve positive and progressive results in projects or assignments

Mastered understanding the issue or problem at hand and provide solutions whereby there is no defined method or solutions to follow

Ability to lead a team or influence ideas of change within a function or across the organization

Strong understanding of financial concepts/theory and how it relates to profitability reporting.

Knowledge of project management concepts and application.

Familiarity with the banking industry, as well as history and performance of M&T.

Solid leadership ability.
