DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: The work involves providing supportive nursing care to hospitalized patients at the Erie County Medical Center Corporation. The incumbent provides routine indirect care to patients in accordance with the policies and regulations of Federal, State and local authorities, as well as accepted standards of practice. Works is performed under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse or Licensed Practical Nurse. Supervision is not a function of this position. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:
Cares for personal need items such as eyeglasses, hearing aides, canes, wheelchairs and other adaptive devices;
Provides patient care to meet their nutritional needs including passing and collecting diet trays and nourishment, set up trays and adaptive feeding equipment;
Transfers patient from bed to cart/chair/wheelchair and back with assistance from clinical staff utilizing transfer assist devices such as mechanical lifts when necessary;
Transports patients utilizing wheelchair, Geri-chair, stretcher or bed;
Assists with ambulation as appropriate;
Assists clinical staff with turning and positioning of patients in accordance with policies and procedures;
Responds appropriately to life threatening emergencies;
Answers call lights and informs staff of patient needs;
Makes unoccupied beds;
Monitors stock and notifies appropriate staff member for ordering replacements;
Changes water for patients;
Changes glove boxes;
Provides stock items as needed to nursing staff.
IN ADDITION, IF ASSIGNED TO LONG-TERM CARE FACILITY:
Performs or assists in transporting of new patients from hospital to Long-Term Care Facility as well as to and from clinic appointments on the Erie County Medical Center campus;
Passes and empties bedpans and urinals and provides proper care for incontinent patients and residents;
Assists in feeding including passing and collecting trays and nourishments, setting up meals and adaptive eating equipment, feeding patients and residents, cleaning patients and residents after eating and cleaning eating area.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITITES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS: Working knowledge of accepted standards of patient care practice; working knowledge of standard precautions; working knowledge of infection control precautions; ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions; ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing; ability to get along well with others and work as a team member; positive and willing attitude; demonstrates flexibility as patient care needs change; patience; physically capable of performing the essential functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodate.
Graduation from high school or possession of high school equivalency diploma.
Possession of Basic Cardiac Life Support Certification at time of permanent appointment.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS FOR ASSIGNMENT TO LONG-TERM CARE FACILITY:
Possession of a Certified Nursing Assistant Certification as issued by the New York State Department of Health at time of appointment.
NOTE: Verifiable part time and/or volunteer experience will be pro-rated toward meeting full time experience requirements.
