Director, Transportation

The Director of Transportation will take a strategic leadership approach and will be accountable for creating plans to develop and integrate the capabilities of the organization in line with the current Supply Chain Mission. The Director of Transportation ensures that internal and external customers receive the highest level of service, makes decisions that maximize supply chain performance and cost metrics, and builds strong associate work teams with a positive work environment. Directly supervises three (3) to five (5) dispatchers and analysts, while having direct responsibility for $20M to $30M of annual spend.


* Communicates and interfaces with carriers to ensure Kirkland's service expectations and carrier cost/service promise is met

* Supervises the carrier selection and routing process on domestic less than truck loads, full truck loads, intermodal freight for inbound/outbound shipments and small parcel carriers

* Promotes smooth work flow and communication lines between all Supply Chain functions, sales/marketing, operations, distribution centers, etc.

* Collaborates with transportation/logistics team on department work-flow processes, deadlines, and process improvement

* Audits transportation freight bills and process for payment by AP

* Maintains and manages carrier tariffs and pricing agreements

* Participates in all transportation cost analysis and other logistical projects

* Works closely with warehouse and logistics coordinators to ensure adherence to corporate transportation /logistics policies

* Participates in the development and maintenance of Corporate Transportation and Logistics management standard operating procedures (SOP)

* Maintains transportation data for monthly budget analysis and quarterly metric/KPI output

* Communicates pertinent transportation information to all transportation and logistics team members as applicable; and cross train as necessary

* Expedites and prioritizes critical projects accordingly

* Supervises carrier claims process, filings, and settlement

* Carrier/Fleet Network Management: Responsible for contract negotiation (partnering with procurement), carrier compliance, claims, equipment management, resource allocations, Fleet MS/TMS; metrics/KPIs; contingency planning, pool distribution points

* Monitors operating metrics such as on time arrival, trailer utilization, cost per mile, cost per case

* Conducts budget/financial modeling as well as store analysis (profitability)/cost to serve; interfaces with finance to develop budget

* Strategic Analysis and Execution: Responsible for projects, strategic initiatives, change management, analytics, project management; identify & execute business/supply chain opportunities

* Safety/Security/Compliance: Ensures Sarbanes-Oxley compliance; ensures adherence with DOT regulations; handles escalated issues, etc. Serves as Safety champion, striving for best in class status while meeting or exceeding Safety performance metrics

* Provides guidance/ training/ mentoring in fleet operations including equipment utilization, maintenance, DOT compliance, Kirkland policy compliance

* Develops vendor back haul, one way transportation, and other cost take out initiatives

* Maintains local relationship with 3rd party carriers and monitors performance of their drivers

* Works with DC management as part of their team in issues such as Order Fill scheduling, Customer Service, building usage, HR Support, etc.

* Conducts continuous analysis of number of routes and analyzes scheduling for possible consolidation, reviews and revises driver schedules to increase efficiency and to lower costs

* Conducts field surveys to evaluate operations and recommends chain

* Performs other duties as assigned


* BA/BS Degree Required (MBA Preferred)

* Minimum of 7 years in Transportation Management

* Transportation certification and Licenses a plus

* Advance knowledge in Microsoft Office applications (Excel, Outlook, Word, Access, Power Point, etc.)

* Knowledge of FMCSA (Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration) rules and regulations

* Experience communicating and working with manufacturers/suppliers, freight forwarders and third party logistics providers; to coordinate the movement of freight from domestic origin points to Canada and Mexico

* Demonstrated ability to lead and supervise a staff

* Transportation and Freight costs analysis experience

* Working experience with Transportation Management Systems (TMS)

* Experience working with transportation brokers and other transportation intermediaries

* Familiar with global trade and transport

* Ability to sit at a computer for extended periods of time

* 50% travel may be required
