Construction Defect Claims Specialist

Job Summary

Under technical direction proactively investigates and adjusts construction defect named insured claims under general liability policies in a fast-paced, collegial environment. Establishes and maintains relationships with insureds and agents as part of delivering superior customer service. Individual will work within specific limits of authority on assignments requiring significant technical complexity and coordination. Utilizing claims policies and guidelines, reviews coverages, determines liability and compensability, secures information, arranges expert inspections, and negotiates and settles claims.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

1. Interprets complex facts and potentially unusual policy coverages and determines if coverages apply to claims submitted, escalating issues as needed.

2. Sets reserves and authorizes payment within scope of authority, effectively settling claims in proactive, cost-effective, appropriate manner and ensuring timely issuance of disbursements.

3. Coordinates and performs investigations and evaluates claims and suits through timely and ongoing contact with insureds, agents, claimants, co-carriers, witnesses, and experts.

4. Utilizes negotiation skills to develop complex settlement packages.

5. Travels as needed to attend pre-trial conferences, mediations, arbitrations, settlement conferences.

6. Identifies claims with third party contribution and recovery potential and coordinates with subrogation/salvage unit.

7. Works with attorneys, account representatives, agents, engineers, construction experts and insureds regarding the handling and/or disposition of more complex claims.

8. Analyzes claims activities and prepares reports for management.

9. Utilizes wide variety of databases and resources to gather data, and track and report information.

10. May provide guidance and assistance to other claims staff and functional areas.

11. Assist and support business partners, including underwriting and agents.

12. Keeps current on state/territory regulations and issues as well as industry activity and trends.

May perform additional duties as assigned

Skills, Knowledge & Abilities

1. Solid knowledge of claims and insurance industry theory and practices.

2. Demonstrated technical expertise and product specific knowledge.

3. Superior interpersonal, communication and negotiation skills. Individual must have the ability to effectively interact with all levels of CNA's internal and external business partners.

4. Ability to work independently in a fast-paced claim environment.

5. Ability to manage time effectively.

6. Strong analytical and problem solving skills.

7. Ability to exercise independent judgment and make critical business decisions effectively.

8. Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite as well as other business-related software.

9. Strong desire to learn new concepts, systems and approaches.

Education & Experience

1. Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience required. Professional designations preferred.

2. Minimum three to five years Litigated General Liability claims experience required. Construction Defect claims experience preferred as well as additional insured knowledge.

3. Licenses in other states will need to be obtained but a plus if already have.
