Dr. Solomon Carter Fuller Mental Health Center - Mental Health Worker II

The Dr. Solomon Carter Fuller Mental Health Center is seeking a compassionate, skilled caregiver to become a part of a dynamic nursing team.

The Dr. Solomon Carter Fuller Mental Health Center is a 60 bed inpatient psychiatric facility that provides comprehensive, information and timely forensic evaluations for individuals to determine pre-trial competency and or criminal responsibility. We also provide quality, integrated care to support an individual's recovery process through ongoing psychiatric treatment and care.

Duties and Responsibilities: (these duties are a general summary and not all inclusive)

The Mental Health Worker II is an integral part of the treatment team on the inpatient units at the Dr. Solomon Carter Fuller Mental Health Center. Serves as a role model for MHW I staff at all times by taking initiative in meeting patient needs, demonstrating professionalism and respect in all interactions and working collaboratively with Registered Nurses, and Mental Health Workers of a higher grade.

Provides direct care services in the skills of daily living by instructing and/or assisting patients any of the following: feeding, bathing, toileting, dressing, cleaning and clothing maintenance, oral and physical hygiene, self-preservation, etc. including taking and reporting vital signs to ensure the daily needs, dignity and human rights of the patients are met.

In order to better serve our patients and to promote safety, the Mental Health Worker will make attempts to establish a rapport with all patients; and will also practice the principles of Safety, Hope and Healing. This includes delivering trauma-informed care, utilizing de-escalation techniques and the patients' Individual Crisis Plans.

Additional duties include providing 15 minute checks and 1:1 or constant observation as ordered; responding efficiently and effectively to emergency situations.

Successful candidates will be committed to treating all patients with dignity and respect through interactions which affirm the individual's needs and preferences and by optimally integrating the patient's perspective into all facets of care; and will advocate for patients, facilitate timely resolution of patient concerns and assist patients in the exercise of their rights.

Candidates must have excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communications skills, ability to lift heavy objects or persons and be comfortable working with patients in physical or emotional distress.

Schedule: 2:45pm - 11:15pm

Days Off : Week 1: Sunday and Friday. Week 2: Tuesday and Saturday.

Preferred Qualification: Given the population served, bilingual or multilingual fluency.

MINIMUM ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS: Applicants must have at least (A) one year of full-time or equivalent part-time experience in providing direct care service to the mentally ill, emotionally or physically handicapped, or (B) any equivalent combination of the required experience and the substitutions below.


I. An Associate's degree or higher with a major in psychology, human services, mental health or retardation may be substituted for the required experience.*

* Education toward such a degree will be prorated on the basis of the proportion of the requirements actually completed.
