About the Position: This position is with Department of Medicine, Pulmonary Medicine, Sleep Disorders, at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, Bethesda, MD.

Tour of duty is generally 40 hours per week with occasional after hour responsibilities. Clinical productivity benchmarks will be set by the Defense Health Agency.

Responsibilities

* Perform duties as a practitioner and as a consultant in Sleep Disorders Center (SDC) with emphasis on problems of moderate to severe complexity.

* Treat patients with sleep medicine problems and follow-up of all cases.

* Provide follow-up care for chronic diseases and complications of these diseases.

* Communicate with experts (worldwide) in other subspecialties in regards to the impact of a sleep disorder on their scope of coverage for a patient with multiple complex medical problems.

* Serve as the expert with advice and decisions of considerable significance within the health facility program.

* Serve as the expert with advice and decisions of considerable significance within the health facility program.

* Provide expert assessment and interpretation of polysomnography, multiple sleep latency, maintenance of wakefulness testing, actigraphy, and overnight oximetry.

* Be responsible for the care of active duty personnel in the course of the medical evaluation board process.

* Provide a comprehensive assessment and narrative summary along with physical profile and appropriate referral paperwork to facilitate completion of the medical evaluation board.

* This position requires that you obtain and maintain a Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.

In order to qualify, you must meet the education and experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Basic Requirement for Physician (Sleep Medicine):

Degree: Doctor of Medicine or Doctor of Osteopathy from a school in the United States or Canada approved by a recognized accrediting body in the year of the applicant's graduation. [A Doctor of Medicine or equivalent degree from a foreign medical school that provided education and medical knowledge substantially equivalent to accredited schools in the United States may be demonstrated by permanent certification by the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) (or a fifth pathway certificate for Americans who completed premedical education in the United States and graduate education in a foreign country).

Graduate Training: Subsequent to obtaining a Doctor of Medicine or Doctor of Osteopathy degree, a candidate must have had at least one year of supervised experience providing direct service in a clinical setting, i.e., a one-year internship or the first year of a residency program in an institution accredited for such training.

Licensure/Certification: Candidates must have a permanent, full, and unrestricted license to practice medicine in a State, District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States.

In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below:

Additional Requirement: 5 years of graduate training in the specialty of the position to be filled or equivalent experience and training. For equivalency purposes specialties related to Sleep Medicine include internal medicine, pulmonary medicine, family medicine, pediatrics, psychiatry, neurology, or otorhinolaryngology (ENT). (For example 3 years residency in internal medicine or family medicine, plus 1 year of experience, plus 1 year training in Sleep Medicine; or 4 year residency in Neurology or Psychiatry plus one year training in Sleep Medicine, or 5 year residency in otorhinolaryngology plus one year Sleep Medicine fellowship or equivalent.)

Experience may not be substituted for residency training that is required for the specialty identified.

Board Certification in Sleep Medicine is highly desired, if you have this certification please mention it in your resume

Education

FOREIGN EDUCATION: If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet the qualification requirements, you must show the education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.
