HJF is seeking a Laboratory Manager to support the Radiation Countermeasure Screening Program in the Scientific Research Department (SRD) at the Armed Forces Radiobiology Research Institute (AFRRI), located at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (USUHS), in Bethesda, Maryland. HJF provides scientific, technical and programmatic support services to AFRRI.

The Lab Manager will be responsible for conducting and supervising research and/or development in collaboration with others on major research projects. The incumbent will serve as liaison to the Principal Investigator, Co-investigators, and other senior staff and primary trainer of research assistants and technical staff in executing major clinical research projects and ensuring the scientific integrity of the research program.

The incumbent will assist the Principal Investigator, Co-Investigators, other senior staff, and collaborating investigators at other institutions in executing major research projects by supervising and training research and support staff, managing data collection and analysis, and ensuring the scientific integrity of the research program. The incumbent will:

Responsibilities:

* Help PI with documents and material preparation and submission.

* Oversee all aspects of running the laboratory and day-to-day activities including coordinating laboratory meetings, monitoring inventories, and ordering supplies and animals.

* Coordinate with University Departments, maintain updated laboratory safety records and personnel training; ensure that staff is certified on all laboratory procedures.

* Generate record keeping books and create working forms for animal irradiation, observation periods, and study specific SOPs.

* Perform peer-reviewed data entry, reporting, and data analysis.

* Oversee maintenance of accurate and complete laboratory records, inventories, logbooks, and databases.

* Devise new, more efficient methods of data storage and retrieval, ensuring that all data and samples are identifiable and secure.

* Participate in regular meetings of research assistants, technical staff, and interns and ensure compliance with study guidelines and timelines; report on a regular basis to the Principal Investigator regarding study progress and staff oversight.

* Identify project needs and procure necessary supplies.

* Serve as liaison to co-investigators, collaborators and companies at other institutions to ensure that processing of biosamples is complete and processed according to study guidelines.

* Responsible for maintaining databases for all collaborating study sites, ensuring timelines of data entry and integrity of data storage, transfer, and processing.

* Assist in the interpretation of research findings.

* Prepare literature reviews on topics relevant to research studies.

* Design and prepare tables, figures, and posters presenting the research findings.

* Assist Principal Investigator in preparation of technical reports, summaries, scientific conference presentations, papers for publication, and applications for research funding.

* Present papers at scientific conferences as requested by the Principal Investigator.

* As needed, participate in animal handling, monitoring, blood draws and administration of supportive care; help to carry out experiments, and prepare the test and control articles; perform protein and molecular assays as necessary.

* Responsible for the maintenance and calibration of all laboratory equipment.

* Ensure that research staff maintain the cleanliness, organization, safety, and security of the laboratory, and ensure that hardware and software are fully functional.

* Ensure that ongoing research is in compliance with IACUC stipulations for all protocols and collaborate with the Principal Investigator and Study Coordinator to prepare protocol amendments as required by changing needs of the study.

* Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Excellent academic record, prior research experience, and superb problem-solving skills. Previous experience assisting on Excel, PowerPoint, and statistical packages is required. Demonstrated ability to work and provide leadership in a team-oriented environment is essential, as are excellent supervisory, interpersonal, and communication skills.

Minimum Education/Training Requirements: Bachelor's degree in Biology or other relevant field.

Minimum Experience: 2 to 4 years of laboratory experience.

Physical Capabilities: Long periods of standing and sitting at a computer. Application of electrode caps requires manual dexterity.

Supervisory Responsibilities/Controls: The incumbent will work under the direction of the Principal Investigator. The incumbent's work will be evaluated for accuracy and reliability, for comprehensive planning, productivity, and overall contribution to ongoing and planned research. In addition, the Lab Manager will be responsible for serving as liaison with funding agencies and scientists at multiple collaborating institutions and for suggesting innovations in the conduct of the research projects.
