About the Position: This position is located within a 22 Bed Medical-Surgical Inpatient ward with telemetry capability in all rooms. Incumbent

can be expected to care for our retired military members, Active duty members and their beneficiaries.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Prolonged periods of walking and standing are required, as well as recurring requirements/periods of heavy lifting to lift,

bend and stoop, i.e., in helping patients.

Parking at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center is very limited and is primarily first come, first serve. The use of commuting alternatives is

highly recommended. The Mass Transit Fringe Benefits (MTFB) are available to Federal Civilian employees. This is in addition to the current

salary, up to $ 125 per month (subject to change), for the commuting costs using Mass Transit. MTFB can be applied to rail, bus and/or approved

vanpools but not parking costs.

* Administer professional patient care in accordance with nursing standards of practice, licensed independent provider and established policies and procedures.

* Utilize the comprehensive nursing process to formulate patient care plans.

* Identify, document and implement nursing care, appropriate to patient care problems.

* Identify effectiveness of care provided, revising care plans as needed.

* Select the course of action in implementing licensed independent provider's orders; interpreting appropriateness to the patient's present condition.

* Set up, operate, monitor and interpret specialty medical equipment to include telemetry.

* Instruct patients and family members regarding disease processes, providing emotional support as needed.

* Educate and enhance health prevention and promotion to patients and family in effort to strive for a state of wellness.

* Act as a facilitator to mediate complaints and concerns of patients, family members taking immediate actions to resolve or refer to a higher level.

* Perform other duties as assigned.

* This position requires the incumbent be able to obtain and maintain a determination of eligibility for a Tier 3 security investigation or access for the duration of employment. A background investigation and credit check are required.

* This position requires the incumbent to have tuberculosis testing.

* Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.

* This position has mandatory seasonal influenza vaccination requirements and is subject to annual seasonal influenza vaccinations unless otherwise exempted for medical or religious reasons.

* This position requires you to satisfactorily complete a pre-employment physical examination.

* This position is covered by the Department of Defense Civilian Employee Drug-Free Workplace Program as a testing designated position (TDP).

* This position requires the incumbent to fulfill credentialing requirements and obtain and maintain appropriate/relevant clinical privileges.

* This position requires the incumbent to work on any day or shift, including PMs, nights, weekends, holidays, or on an "on call" basis, necessary to meet mission requirements.

* This position has been designated as Mission Essential and the incumbent must assume essential personnel status during inclement weather/emergencies.

* This position requires that you obtain and maintain a Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.

In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Basic Requirement for Clinical Nurse:

Education: A graduate or higher level degree, bachelor's degree, associate degree, or diploma from an accredited professional nursing educational program is required. This education must have been accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education, Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs, Accreditation Commission for Midwifery Education, or an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained. (NOTE: You must submit a copy of your transcripts at the time of submission of your application).

Degree from Foreign Nursing School: Official certification from the Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools is required for individuals who graduated from foreign nursing schools. (NOTE: You must submit a copy of your certification at the time of submission of your application).

Licensure: Applicants must have passed the National Council Licensure Examination. In addition, they must possess a current, active, full, and unrestricted license or registration as a professional nurse from a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States.

Experience: In addition to the above requirements, applicants must meet one of the following requirements:

Successful completion of a PhD or equivalent doctoral degree from a professional nursing educational program or related medical science field;


at least one full year of professional nursing experience (equivalent to the GS-9 grade level) which includes providing direct nursing care to patients within an inpatient medical-surgical ward; interpreting telemetry equipment, developing/implementing patient assessments and care plans AND possession of a diploma, bachelor's degree, or master's degree from a professional nursing educational program. (Note: You must attach a copy of your registration, if applicable.)

FOREIGN EDUCATION: If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet the qualification requirements, you must show the education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.
