Departmental Overview

The Lawrence Hall of Science, UC Berkeley's public science center, features hands-on exhibit experiences, a planetarium, 3D theatre, museum store, cafe, and several dedicated learning lab spaces where educators teach visiting school groups and other audiences and offer drop in experiences. The Hall also designs curriculum that is used around the world and runs professional learning workshops for educators.

The Visitor Services and Retail Operations team works to provide visitors, guests and staff of the Lawrence Hall of Science with friendly and informative service and products throughout their visit, from first entry, where they are greeted by the Visitor Service Desk, to grabbing a snack in the Bay View Cafe, to shopping in the Discovery Corner Store. The team helps generate revenue to support Hall programs by selling annual memberships, tickets to planetarium shows and 3D movies, as well as food and drinks, books and toys about science, technology, engineering and math.

The Operations Supervisor works across the admission desk, museum store, and cafe, schedules staff across these operational spaces according to the needs of the business, communicates with staff about their roles for the day, makes sure staff get breaks, and ensures they are supplied with all materials they need to carry out their jobs throughout the day.

The Operations Supervisor has a specific focus on the Visitor Services Desk, which admits all visitors and informs them about what the Hall has to offer. The supervisor motivates and tracks sales of annual memberships, 3D movie tickets, planetarium shows, and other ticketed experiences. The supervisor should be knowledgeable about all museum program experiences that are included with admission, and about school and family programs sold through the web and sales office to include summer camps, school field trips, and more. The Operations Supervisor works the desk when needed and leads the performance of all employees who work there from open to close of business.
