The City of Belmont's Summer College Internship Program is brought to you by the City of Belmont in collaboration with the "Two County Next Generation Committee", sponsored by the City/County Manager's Associations of San Mateo and Santa Clara Counties. The Committee is chartered to identify programs to address the "retirement wave" of baby boomer managers and professionals who are exiting local government in the region. Each year internships are available for college students at the undergraduate and/or graduate levels in an effort to attract college students to local government careers. This internship will be in the Police Department Support Services Division, reporting to management/supervisory staff and on some projects, may report to a Lead. This is a seasonal, non-benefitted position with hours from 18-24 hours per week, beginning June/July for approximately three (3) months. This internship will provide an excellent learning opportunity for a student seeking experience working in municipal government; and an opportunity to apply their academic training in a live work setting. Minimum Qualifications: High School Diploma; currently enrolled or recent graduate (within the past 12 months) in an undergraduate or graduate level program. Examples of relevant major or course of study include the following: Public Administration, Political Science, Public Policy, Criminology, and Sociology. Competency in Microsoft Office Suite is a plus.

Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate is interested in a potential career in municipal government, state or federal government, or other public sector organization. The ideal candidate will enjoy serving the community, interact well with staff--officers, detectives, command staff from all levels of the organization and the public. An individual with strong public relations skills, who is detail oriented, organized, customer service focused, an effective communicator, self-motivated, self starter, and who can work independently or with a team will likely succeed in this internship.


This is a non-benefitted position that will last approximately 3 months. This incumbent in this position will receive sick leave in accordance with State Law.
