Position Description

Advertised Job Summary

As an employee of USC Beaufort's Water Quality Laboratory, this job will involve the routine collection and analysis of surface water samples throughout Beaufort County in a manner consistent with the Lab's standard operating procedures and State certification requirements.

Minimum Qualifications (Classified and Unclassified positions)

Master's degree in a related field and 3 years related research experience, or bachelor's degree in a related field and 5 years related research experience; or high school diploma and 9 years related research experience.

Preferred Qualifications

Academic degree being in a basic or applied science. Extensive working knowledge and experience in boating navigation and traversing coastal wetlands and inland estuarine waterways, specifically Beaufort County and the surrounding areas. Proficient in conducting water quality sampling in accordance with EPA Region 4 protocol for collecting, handling and transporting water samples. Knowledgeable in EPA approved methods for examination of microbiological and biological compounds, inorganic and organic constituents and metals. Knowledge of Beaufort County's and the Town of Bluffton's water sampling strategies and SCDHEC's Shellfish Program. Ability to interface with municipal, county and state personnel involved in water quality restoration and regulation and familiarity with QAPP, TMDL, and 319 grant processes. Chemistry experience using instrumentation such as Total Organic Carbon (TOC), Inductively Coupled Plasma (ICP), Flow-Injection Nutrient analyzers, and automated BODanalyzers. Microbiology experience with Idexx methodologies is preferred.


Working knowledge of boats and outboard motors, multi-parameter water quality field instruments, GPS units and GIS mapping technology. Possess word processing and spreadsheet skills, as well as the ability to conduct basic graphical and statistical analyses. Proficient with Geographic Information Systems (GIS) user based applications, and mobile hand-held Global Positioning Systems. Proficiency with basic computer programs to include word processing, data spreadsheets, elementary statistical analysis, and budget administration. Proficiency in the conduct of water quality sampling in accordance with USEPA Region 4 protocols. Ability to interface with municipal, County, and State personnel involved in water quality restoration and regulation, including the ability to make presentations of laboratory findings. Proficiency with interpreting and enforcing State and Federal regulations pertaining to environmental standards. Some knowledge of the analytical instrumentation typically used to conduct bacterial, chemical, and nutrient analyses of water samples. Ability to trailer, launch, and operate a boat with outboard motor. Ability to navigate coastal waterways within and around Beaufort County. Knowledge of non-point sources of pollution within Beaufort County; knowledge of individual watersheds within Beaufort County; and knowledge of how non-point source pollution impacts the ability to harvest shellfish. Must have a valid driver's license and have completed state or local boating safety, navigation and operation course and be ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
