Lab Technicians in the Immunohematology Reference Lab (IRL) Document telephone messages and IRL customer orders for special blood products. Coordinate, transport and monitor blood samples (as applicable). Monitor and order supplies. Maintain inventories for IRL reagents, supplies, equipment, and products. Data entry. Manufacture components (as applicable). Adhere to explicit standard operating procedures and interpret test results in accordance with the applicable regulatory requirements. All tasks are performed in highly regulated environment. Successful Lab Technicians will have a strong attention to detail, a customer-service focus and the ability to treat both internal and external customers with compassion at all times.


1. Receive customer calls, including orders for antigen negative blood products, and refer if applicable, to appropriate personnel.

2. Operate, maintain and may perform quality control checks on laboratory equipment.

3. Perform requesting/ordering, receiving, inspection and storage of IRL supplies and reagents. Ensure adequate inventory of required supplies.

4. May perform manufacturing duties associated with special blood products, if applicable.

5. May perform inventory management, coordination and shipment duties associated with donor products.

6. May perform labeling and verification of blood products.

7. Maintain accurate, legible and complete records.

8. Perform duties associated with receipt, coordination, shipment and transport of patient and donor blood samples.

9. Monitor temperatures of blood products and donor/patient samples, if applicable.

10. May perform antigen typing duties under direct supervision, as applicable.

11. Adhere to procedures and good manufacturing practices (GMP).

12. May perform for red cell antigen typing under direct supervision, if applicable.

13. Perform other related duties as required.

Perform routine tasks in accordance with established standard operating procedures under close supervision. Deglycerolize or wash red cells and respond to temperature excursions of product storage as needed in emergency situations to include after hours, weekends, and holidays as applicable. On call responsibilities, as applicable.


* Education: High school diploma or equivalent plus at least 12 hours of college-level coursework in Biology & 12 hours of college-level coursework in Chemistry required; Associate degree (AS) or higher preferred.

* Experience: 4 years of laboratory experience required or equivalent combination of education and experience.

* Certifications: No certifications required; if selected candidate has ASCP license (MLT, MT, MLS, CLS) then we can hire at the IRL Medical Technician job level.

* Skills: All technician jobs require good computer skills, attention to detail, accurate documentation and good decision making skills. Good communication skills in both oral and written English required.

* Physical requirements: May include standing, stretching, stooping and bending for extended time periods. The ability to lift, pull, push and move objects of up to 50 pounds. You may work in walk-in refrigerator/freezers for periods of time.

* Training & Work Schedule: Training may occur on day or evening shift. After training, schedule is considered a "Baylor" shift - working Saturday, Sunday & Monday 7pm-7am (36 hours) and getting paid for 40 hours.

Essential Functions/Physical Requirements

The duties are representative of the essential functions of the position. Operational flexibility is required to meet sudden and unpredictable needs. Available to work overtime, other shifts, early mornings, evenings, holidays and weekends. Requires standing, stretching, stooping and bending for extended time periods. Lift, pull, push and move objects of up to 50 pounds. May work in walk-in refrigerator/freezers for periods of time. Work under pressure and within time standards. Required to wear protective clothing such as lab coats, gloves, face shields, etc. when there is exposure to blood and blood products and/or where work location requires. Ability to use a personal computer and applicable software for sustained periods of time. Exposure levels are based on the essential functions as stated in this position description; however, in some instances, variances may occur due to the applicable nature of this position within a particular work site. Therefore the work site may determine the exposure level to be greater than or less than the below stated level. This position is exposure determination 1 in view of the fact that the position requires the incumbent work under conditions where the potential exists for the incumbent to make contact with blood or blood components as a result of splashes, spills, and/or needlesticks. Potential exists to also be exposed to hazardous chemicals.
