The Department of Dermatology is currently seeking a Dermatology Technician Assistant to work at the Sibley Memorial Hospital in Washington, DC. With close supervision and instruction, dependent on clinical need, this position assist the Dermatologists at Sibley Memorial Hospital with patient care which may include but is not limited to the list below:

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

Anticipate the needs of patients as indicated by the Epic schedule;

Demonstrate competence in identifying individual patients when escorting to exam room

Obtain and concisely record an accurate patient history

* Chief complaint (reason for visit)

* Past Dermatology History

* Past Medical History

* Family History

* Medications

* Allergies and drug reactions

* Social history

* Review of systems

* History of Present Illness

Skills Set

* Manage the flow of the clinic to stay on time and run smoothly

* Demonstrate appropriate frequency of hand washing

* Measure and record vital signs

* Handing of medications (draw up local anesthesia, identify with epinephrine vs. without, draw up kenalog and dilute to appropriate strength with appropriate dilutant

* Handling of liquid nitrogen

Procedures

* Perform set up for the following procedures: cryosurgery, punch biopsy, shave biopsy, ED&C, shave removal, excision, and MOHS surgery.

* Upload procedure site pictures into Epic using the Canto application

* Handle all instruments with proper technique.

* Perform sterile technique.

* Perform suture and/or staple removals with proper documentation in Epic and care instructions to the patient.

* Apply proper techniques for topical medications, dry and clean dressings, suture line care, most warm/moist cold compresses, pressure dressings, and unna boots.

* Appropriate care and disposition of surgical specimens and cultures obtained during clinic visit.

* Appropriate handling and processing of laboratory specimens obtained during clinic visit.

* Assist in cosmetic procedures.

Health & Safety

* Properly assist physically or visually disabled patients.

Patient Education

* Assist patient in preparing to leave examination room as needed.

* Complete the patient instructions portion of the After Visit Summary (AVS).

* Thoroughly review AVS (verbally) and any instructions at the end of each visit with the patient.

* Verbally review wound care instructions with the patient if applicable.

* Understand basic knowledge regarding indication, proper use, and potential side effects of a given medication.

Resource Center Duties

* Manage incoming and outgoing Epic Inbasket messages

* Call in prescriptions

* Call patients post-procedure per physicians request

* Return patient calls regarding problems

* Call patients with benign lab and biopsy results

* Appropriate handling and processing of test results associated with dermatology and other visits if applicable.

Instrument Maintenance

* Stock examination rooms in assigned area and ensure medication expiration dates are current.

* Disinfect and maintain examination rooms.

General Medical Knowledge

* Maintain current CPR certification.

* Understand basic dermatology anatomy, skin structure and function, and dermatology emergencies.

Must complete currently required JHMI courses, such as:

* Complete Annual Review paperwork in a timely manner.

Complete training in software such as Epic and Canto

* Assist physician chair side as a scribe, including documenting a complete and concise dermatology history and entering and pending orders instructed by physician

Qualifications:

High School Diploma or GED equivalent required. Must be a Certified Medical Assistant and must obtain Dermatology Technician certification from the Association of Certified Derm Technicians (ACDT) within 6 months of start date and must maintain certification while employed in the Department of Dermatology. Failure to obtain/maintain certification might result in termination of employment in the Department of Dermatology.

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. Failure to meet this requirement may result in termination of employment.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
