Senior Technical Project Leader

Cray Inc. Austin, TX
Who We Are

Our business is supercomputing. We've been developing, building and supporting highly advanced computing solutions for the world's most complex science, engineering and analytics challenges since 1976. We pride ourselves on understanding the problems our customers are trying to solve and developing the technologies that enable them to make the discoveries that better our world.

Who You Are

You are a dynamic, driven professional with a passion for success – yours, your company's and your customer's. We are seeking a Cray Technical Project Leader who combines Program Management skills with strong technical depth in computer architecture to drive the planning and execution of our development project. The TPL works with R&D management and their functional teams to ensure that R&D resources are aligned in their planning, stay coordinated through execution and drive technical resolution of issues through the full life-cycle of their assigned programs.

To be successful in this role, the TPL must be able to understand product specifications and technical architectures to oversee and guide cross-functional planning for proper development, bring-up, test and validation of product prototypes.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

* This is an exciting time to join our team as you will be working with other TPL/Program Managers to plan and execute the multi-year development, bring up, validation test, and first production release of Cray's next generation flagship supercomputer product and associated network technologies.

* You operate based on inputs from product management, sales, and support organizations, and define and execute a product development plan for R&D, providing input to the executive phase reviews, leading to delivery of a product that can be successful in the marketplace, balancing tradeoffs be cost, schedule, and feature set as you seek the most cost-effective use of resources to achieve the goal of an on-time production release of high quality.

* Your focus is not on product definition/architecture, but execution. But with a deep understanding of architecture so that intelligent tradeoffs can be made.

* Our Technical Program Management team covers all areas of development, from SW, HW, and ASIC validation. Your focus will be the planning and execution of the validation of the Cray network leading to production readiness. This involves coordination of all functional groups within R&D, and working with operations to achieve that goal.

* You will be called upon to take a very direct hands-on approach to debug the system level problems that cross functions. This means pulling in and coordinating the work of the functional experts across the company and with our vendors, driving the debug process by asking the right questions, being extremely logical, leveraging the skills and expertise of others, and driving the debug forward.

* You will span the project in multiple dimensions, timing of events at large and small scale, working in the technical details making tradeoff decisions while keeping an eye on the bigger picture, working with R&D and managing the interaction and planning with Operations, and looking both inwards and outwards, disseminating information internal to Cray and to customers and suppliers.

You will have to think outside of the box constantly, bring your past experience to come up with novel ways to resolve the constant tension between R&D's desire to create the perfect product and the need to ship a design when it is "good enough", balancing risk vs reward.

RequirementsMinimum Education and/or Experience:

* Requires a Bachelor's degree in computer or electrical engineering or equivalent experience. A relevant graduate degree is desirable.

15+ years of related experience.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

* An understating of board and ASIC hardware design, including digital logic, highs speed logic and IO ports.

* A strong understanding of computer networking, high-speed fabrics and ethernet.
