This position is part of the WHS BCTF Vietnam Commission. The HISTORIAN plans, coordinates, and administers the oral history project, with responsibility for obtaining appropriate venues, scheduling veteran interviews, coordinating film crews/videographer, processing release forms and accessioning the final work product to professional historical archival standards.

Responsibilities

As a HISTORIAN, GS-0170-13, your typical work assignments may include the following under supervision:

* Analyzes historical information to provide a complete, accurate, and objective record of Departmental, military, and national security history

* Research historical records and identify information requirements to prepare for various events and targeted audiences

* Develops and delivers authoritative reports/presentations on sensitive and highly visible issues to inform senior leadership on a wide range of historical topics.

* Edits and rewrites, as necessary, draft histories and ensures that all monographs and information papers meet Departmental standards, as well as those of the broader community of professional historians

Qualifications

You may qualify at the GS-13 level, if you fulfill the following qualification requirements:

Basic Education Requirement for Historian

A. Bachelor's degree (or higher degree) in history; or related field that included at least 18 semester hours in history. (Note: Must attach transcripts) OR

B. Have a combination of education and experience which includes courses equivalent to a major in history, or a major in a related field that included at least 18 semester hours in history, plus appropriate experience or additional education. (Note: Must attach transcripts.)

Minimum Qualifications

In addition to meeting the basic education requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below:

One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-12 grade level in the Federal service that demonstrates your ability to: 1) Conduct original historical research, to include collecting and verifying source materials; 2) Develope historical publications, to include writing historical narratives and selecting illustrative aids; AND 3) Provide educational outreach and advisory services on historical matters.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

GRADUATE EDUCATION: One academic year of graduate education is considered to be the number of credits hours your graduate school has determined to represent one academic year of full-time study. Such study may have been performed on a full-time or part-time basis. If you cannot obtain your graduate school's definition of one year of graduate study, 18 semester hours (or 27 quarter hours) should be considered as satisfying the requirement for one year of full-time graduate study

FOREIGN EDUCATION: If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet the qualification requirements, you must show the education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.
