Assistant Manager Chemistry Stores

The Department of Chemistry at Iowa State University is seeking an Assistant Manager for the Chemistry Store. This position will be responsible for managing all financial aspects of the program. The Assistant Manager will create and analyze data and make recommendations to the manager on methods of increasing efficiency, reducing overhead costs and passing savings on to the customers. This position will establish record-keeping procedures; identify and resolve billing issues on specific accounts; and direct the annual inventory process and fiscal year end activities. Other responsibilities include direct involvement with procurement and contract management by evaluating contracts and analyzing sales data and trends to make recommendations to the manager and act as the contact for non-stock purchases.

The Assistant Manager will be responsible for the planning and organizing all customer service activities and represent the Chemistry Stores at various University events. This position will develop and promote the program by designing web content, fliers, email communications, and coordinating vendor shows. This position will propose, plan and implement training for users of a new tracking program; develop methods to identify customer needs; and counsel on procurement policies. In addition, the Assistant Manager will supervise employees including hiring, training and evaluating work.

Chemistry Stores serves the scientific community at Iowa State University (ISU) by providing on-campus access to high quality, low cost goods and services to ISU researchers, teaching labs, and ISU affiliates. Chemistry Stores maintains a large inventory of chemicals, consumable supplies, personal protective equipment, gases, and scientific equipment. As the sole source of industrial and high purity compressed gases and cryogenic liquid dewars for ISU departments, in addition, the Chemistry Stores coordinates all activities related to the procurement, tracking and rental fees for these products.


Bachelor’s degree and related experience; OR a combination of education and/or related experience totaling more than 4 years unless otherwise specified under supplemental required education and experience. Experience must be at a comparable level and directly related to the duties of this position.
